Linux Steam Clues

The Linux lovers at Phoronix have word that a number of Linux libraries are included in the no-longer-active demo for Left 4 Dead, which they call "additional confirmation that Valve Software has ported their Steam game client to Linux." Their write-up actually wavers between speculation and certainty, but they place a lot of weight on the fact that these Linux libraries are within the Windows demo, not the Linux server, and bolster their case that native Linux support is in the works at Valve by reminding us that Running with Scissors has confirmed plans for a Linux version of Postal III, and that Postal III will use Valve's Source engine.

Linux is fine but I'd rather pay for Windows myself. I can't do music production (Cubase), gaming, graphic design (Photoshop) or a whole host of other very important tasks with it.

Linux will never make it as a replacement for Windows on the Desktop, let alone as a gaming machine, lol, give me a break, Linux sucks for gaming, always has, always will.

There is a reason software/hardware manufacturers/developers in the main do not support Linux, and that reason isn't going away anytime soon.

I used Linux for a number of years, the best thing I ever done was get out of that Linux induced mentality, get away from the Linux Zealots, get away from Linux, and use an OS that CAN actually do EVERYTHING I want to do, and do it with ease, something which Linux, unfortunately, can not do, and probably never will.

In a word, Linsux

This, as the rumours indicate, would include a Linux version of the Source engine.
Not necessarily. There is no indication that the Source engine is being ported to Linux, just that a single upcoming Source engine game will run on Linux. Hopefully that means Linux versions of HL2/TF2/Portal but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

A linux version of steam wont do much to address the fact that most of the games on steam are windows only.

Same here, Overon. I wonder how many people are in the same boat, only using MS Windows to (easily) play PC games? I do all of my real work in Linux and boot into Windows for gaming, which can get annoying. But when Windows craps out, I can nuke everything and start over rather painlessly.

I would've been in complete agreeance with Overon, but then Adobe CS4 came out with all sorts of 3D acceleration that is just too slow in Virtualbox.

Maybe one of these days I'll get a Mac that's good enough for Photoshop/InDesign, and game on Linux, with Steam and the various Wine/Cedega shenanigans.

If steam and valve games can be played natively on linux, it will be one step closer for people like me dumping microsoft windows. The only reason I use windows is because of gaming.

Well, I just hope that if Steam is going to support multiple platforms that it handles it sensibly. That said I welcome the idea of supporting Linux as it will also make it easier for people hosting dedicated servers on Linux.
