Assassin's Creed 2 Talk

Joystiq confirms plans for an Assassin's Creed sequel, relating comments about the project during Ubisoft's first-half fiscal 2008-09 conference call. A sequel to the successful stealth/action game was probably a given, but the confirmation indicates they are shooting for a release during Ubisoft's fiscal 2010, which would make for a holiday 2009 release using those old-fashioned non-fiscal calendars the rest of us are saddled with. GiantBomb has their own light to shed on this news (thanks Destructoid), as during the taping of an episode of Gametrailers' Bonus Round they picked up word from tapped-in industry analyst Michael Pachter that the middle ages setting of the first Assassin's Creed will shift several hundred years forward into the 18th century, perhaps to be set during the French Revolution. This news of a time shift is not confirmed, and other details like target platforms are not available at this time.

can they get someone else besides Jade Raymond to pimp this game? I'm positive the fact that's she's pretty distracted most gamers from seeing how boring AC would turn out to be

Derailed by politics already? Not only that but you've got the ol' holocaust in there, which is a nice nod to Godwin. Really though the big loser is communism, which has lost its prime position to terrorism and anti-Islamic sentiment. I think I'll go start a pro-communism group on Facebook.

Heh, it seems I'm one of the few people who actually enjoyed AC a lot. The setting, the atmosphere, music etc. were all great. The core gameplay was also pretty good even if it fell short in more than a few significant ways. I can certainly sympathize with complaints about excessive repetitiveness for one.

Still, I had fun, though the fact that I usually enjoy collector's games didn't exactly hurt. I probably got more fun out of just prowling rooftops looking for flags or templars to assassinate, than performing the silly samey prerequisite tasks in each city. Speaking of that, I think I was able to cleanly assassinate about one guy through the whole game. For the rest, I had to go Rambo because the guards suddenly had spider-sense. Not exactly 100% in line with the title

Plot-wise, I'm not sure how much I'll like a sequel if it doesn't include playing as Altair.. I guess it's a weakness of the base plot that you're not really the guy you play as through the whole game. Desmond's story didn't really strike a note with me... I'm also worried they'll do the usual sequel thing and just add a pile of moves and jumps without any other substance. I.e. patching up some of those gameplay-holes, and I'm not talking about two(?) extra types of tasks like we got in the PC version..

I thought it was pretty damned fun but did get repetitive quickly. If they can add in some real sidequest material and let you enter more of the buildings then I don't see what people could really complain about. The story was good and spanned a decent length, the graphical engine was jaw dropping at times and the free running was enjoyable. I just want the fighting retuned a bit to be more difficult and some sidequests to do other than "COLLECT 500 FLAGS LOL" then they can have my $50.00.

For it's faults, I think Fallout 3 raised the bar on games like this.

It is possible to have a cross platform game with more complexity than "hold button to push people out of the way".

AC was fun in small doses but the repeating the same action over and over to get to an inevitable snafu killing (where the whole world jumps you before you kill the guy) just got old really fast.

The worst thing? That the world was really well realised and there were opportunities left right and center to make it more than just your standard lazy ass console product...

Mebbe now that we've sorta impressed ourselves out of massive jumps in graphical improvements, people can go back to focusing on gameplay...

I take it you haven't heard of "Expelled", which HellSlayer is advertising in his signature. HellSlayer invokes Godwin's Law in every post. Of course I don't believe in some retarded "law" that some Usenet nerd made up decades ago, just like I don't believe in some old dude that some ancients made up millenia ago...

So just to check, you are postulating that FarCry 2 is a copy and paste of FarCry 1? You don't see any differences between the two games?

Expelled the Movie? Wow you must not be paying attention cause that movie has been torn apart by people who use reason and logic to justify their statements.

lol, I was just about to point out the same thing. To suggest that FarCry 2 is a copy & paste job is absolutely preposterous.

You would be right.

HellSlayer invokes Godwin's Law in every post.
How? Godwin's Law relates to Nazis, not evolution (which is what Expelled is about) or conservatism. Still, HellSlayer's signature is worth mentioning... I find it VERY worrying that anyone could believe the nonsense promoted by either of those sites. Anybody that takes NewsBusters seriously should be sterilised.

No instead Far Cry 2 cut and pasted guard points

But comparing Fallout 3 to Assassin's Creed? At least AC's story was alot more cohesive.

But I enjoyed AC (except the repetitive same 3 missions before the assassinations. I still hope they set the game in Asia.

Things they need to add for the sequel:

- Platforming that requires skill.
- Day/night and weather cycles.
- Real stealth that revolves around lighting, sound and disguises.
- Combat that requires skill.
- Multiple meaningful ways to assassinate targets ala Hitman.
- Unique missions per city.

AC was disappointing because it lacked all of the above. As with so many other newer games, it focused on the "experience" (i.e. graphics and sound) more than gameplay mechanics and depth. The sequel should do the opposite.

Re platforming... Perhaps, as long as they didn't take it too far. I rather enjoyed cruising the rooftops without having to worry about timing jumps/grabs or pressing the correct button every split second. I'd rather see a RPGLite system in there, where you could either opt for parkour/stealth/combat proficiency or a mix, but not all.

Re combat, the dynamics did require a certain amount of timing and finesse. I'd hate to see a street fighter-esque combo-system, which - while being highly skillful - is a genre I can't stand Though I agree combat was a bit on the easy side. Having slightly less sportive guards that didn't patiently await their turn to stab you while having you cornered and outnumbered 15 to 1 would've helped, though.

But yeah, I think I agree on the major points. More emphasis on assassinations and less on slaughtering of city-garrisons. More weight on planning/information gathering itself - not just as a means of "unlocking" the target, would also have been nice.
