Wheel of Time Game Plans

This press release has word that film studio Red Eagle Entertainment is entering the world of games, as the owner of the rights to late author Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series says they will create a series of Wheel of Time games to accompany each of their movies based on the series, the first of which, The Eye of the World, is currently in production. Even more ambitiously, they say their Red Eagle Games is also to create an MMOG based on the series. There's not much more in the way of details about the games, other than they are being targeted at "all major videogame platforms, including consoles, personal computers, handheld systems and wireless devices." There's an article on VentureBeat (thanks Mike Martinez and GamesIndustry.biz) focusing on the riskiness associated with such plans. Those with long memories will recall Legend Entertainment released an Unreal-engine Wheel of Time action/RPG in 1999.

Yea, those were good times, you throw someone in the lava with the whirlwind and they would cast the switch places spell and YOU would go in the lava.

Yeah, that's when you pray you could cancel it with air shield and then use levitate to just float to the side...

Another good one would be freeze, and then earth tremor.

40 Ter'Angreal in total to use. Awesome!

WOT is extremely tough and fun game, nigh impossible to beat with most recent patch on hard. Run out of ter' angreales half way through the level, your screwed. You have to play it strategically as a whole level. Probably Legends best game, they put as much depth into all the charactors as any RPG and excellent acting and the story could stand up to any PC game.

It's just too damn bad an asshole like cliffy *kills PC games* got hold of these guys and made them do a story/game that would forever (well as long as that idiot is still at epic) damage the Unreal franchise.

His books have always been full of bloat and suck. In a movie they can show an oak tree rather than spend a page describing it. I have no trouble believing they can crop each book down to a long movie.

I disagree, that was not the problem with the WoT series. The problem was he kept branching out to new characters, so by the time you got to book 10 there were so many main characters and different plots it was impossible to keep track anymore. There must be over fifty main characters and a dozen different plot lines going by now.

You know what shits me up the wall about Jordon... He wrote 2 fucking prequels... ie. it wasn't enough that he milked the bejesus out of the main storyline, he had to start doing "extended universe" stuff before the original was even done...

Now, cancer doesn't negotiate and I feel for the guy, but at least focus on the fucking 12 book monstrosity that your fans have been reading since 1990 rather than wandering off...

And he was "lucky" that unlike Gemmell who was struck down suddenly, he had time to at least partially complete his work.

ps. What's this Legend game people keep mentioning? I keep hoping someone has put Druss in to the digital world.. =)

Edit: Well, "in to the digital world" more than the Spectrum ZX game based on Legend.. =)

and the WoT game was quite nifty, based on Unreal iirc. Extremely atmospheric.

lol. I'm really liking you guys' description of this game but I never played it--I'm going to look into it now.

As for the books, well someone gave me the first one as a gift. I started it with interest, but then had to force myself through to the end. After I finished it I pretty much went back and reread the Belgariad and Lord of the Rings. Then I felt satisfied again

funny, WoT is one of the very rare games I played and also never finished even though I liked it very much...

I remember in an PC Gamer article about the original WOT game they asked the developers who would win in a fight between Rand and Frodo, They said Rand would definitely win however he would break the world in the process so they called it a tie.

They also said they liked the books, because even in paperback form, you can cause some serious damage to someone if you use the tome as a weapon.

Yeah, by movies I'd have to presume they mean mini-series for TV. However, cutting out all the extraneous, irrelevent bullshit from the series probably compresses it down to about 3 books, which could then easily be doable for 3 movies.

And as for the Legend game, I liked the visuals, but the game was way too much of an FPS for what should have been a real CRPG. That's why I was thinking that making a game based on WoT with the NWN engine (say the modified engine The Witcher uses) would work pretty damn well.

They are making movies out of this series!?! Each book would be a 6 hour marathone, no way they could do each book justice in a 2 hour movie. I foresee a milking of the franchise with some real shitty movies. Now as far as a video game goes they definatly got a shitload of content to build on, though I'm sure it'll be craptastic too. And ya I have to agree read books 1-6 then forget the rest.

I think the universe RJ created is great and might end up a greater legacy than the WoT series. I'm still eagerly awaiting the final book, and it's been a long, LONG wait.

My biggest gripe with the whole WoT series is that the characters have always felt a bit too one-dimensional. I've always preferred authors that write the story around the characters, not the other way around. That said, I've enjoyed the series as a whole and am rather interested in a game based on the universe.

The original Wheel of Time PC game was fantastic. For those that don't know, it only had a spell system. Multiplayer was amazing in that you had to truly outwit your opponent. When you used a 'spell', it would follow it's target until it hit. For example I could fire off a decay spell which, when hit with it, would slowly drain health over time. If my opponent saw the spell coming, he could use a 'reflect' power (if he picked it up) which would reflect the spell and bounce it back towards me at twice the speed. At which I could (if I timed it just right) fire off a spell that could teleport someone else and make them the new target of the spell. If the third combatant had any time at all, he could throw up a shield that could totally destroy that type of spell. The only effect that couldn't be defended against (I believe) was Balefire; think of it as a delayed railgun that could beam through any walls on the level and totally erase the recipient. I always liked the whirlwind spell - it was great fun picking someone up and throwing them into a vat of lava.

Good times, good times.

After book two Robert Jordan went insane ..and then went broke. After which he was paid by the word. This would explain the reason why by book 10 it took him 15 fucking pages to describe a goddamn dress (I kid you not about the 15 pages)

Robert Jordon went from being the next Tolkien to being a complete hack in no more then 7 books.

I double dog DARE anyone to read book ten without skipping over entire chapters.

RJ died on 9/16/2007.
He finished book 11, which was a return to his roots.
Brian Sanderson has been charged to finish the series in one more book, book 12, due to come out Fall 2009.

Books 1-3 were great. Books 4-6 were amazing. Books 7-9 dragged. Book 10 sucked. Book 11 was a return to the roots.

The Wheel of Time game was beautiful and moody-- and no, I never finished it either. Which is a long-running regret considering how much I enjoyed it. The one thing I didn't understand till after I stopped playing was that the game mechanic was based off the Wizards of the Coast card systems such as Magic the Gathering.

I hope the new games meet expectations. Now that Jordan has passed on perhaps more liberties can be taken.

Not sure when the last book will be finished--it's being completed by one of Robert Jordan's friends and we'll all just have to wait. One book left. Shame he died when he did. sigh.

So wtf is going on with this series? Is it ever going to be finished? I'm pretty much beyond caring at this point, but I'd still like to know how it ends. I've never seen a writer beat a story to death that way that Jordan did. Any cow milked that much would have died of dehydration long ago.

That Legend game was brutal. WoT would be something that the Aurora engine would be suited for quite well.
