Re: Congrats to Obama Nov 5, 2008, 14:13

Now if he lowers my taxes like he promised, I might even like him!

I hope that never happens....

I don't' think everyone is aware of the current situation...and everyone that voted for "CHANGE" actually voted for higher taxes.

It will be impossible for Obama to do what he said he would....the only way to to do (other than the mentioned magic wand) will be to raise taxes across the board. To give the have nots something, you need to have that money come from somewhere. If they quit printing money, they will need to raise taxes on everyone.

Now, what do you do? Raise taxes? On homeowners? Well, great, fuck you then, good luck getting elected next time around, us homeowners are tired of getting F'd in the A. But the have nots dont' care if you do that, they never paid taxes in the first place!

No one will call Obama on his promises. no president ever gets called on them. The last one I can remember that did was "Read my lips, no new taxes".

Well, that just isn't feasible. You can't get something for nothing. Am I happy Obama won? No. Would I have been ecstatic had McCain won? No. I just hope all of your glee and excitement doesn't dwindle in 12-20 months when shit isn't "changed".

I watched this stuff pretty late last night, and all of the people they interviewed at these don't have a fucking clue what "change" means. They may be a little surprised when "change" actually is a code word for "high taxes".

Anyway. I could go on forever about the fallicies and bs in the comments about Obama and what he does, but all of those bashing Bush and how he has "torn the country apart". Be reminded, Even at his lowest point, he had a hell of a better rating than House and Congress!

The problem isn't the prez, it is the lawmakers. Veto is bullshit when the veto comes from R and the D control more than enough to override. I am not so sure that the majority of America realises what may happen over this next term. It is very possible that the Dems may steamroll a lot of shit.

Things that weren't talked about at all, and have been promised for years by everyone, then gets tossed to the side:
-Health care
-Social Security

I don't see them getting solved anytime soon, and we have record retirements starting during Obama's time. Just something to thin kabuot. They aren't working on a solution RIGHT NOW - so we will be neck deep in SHIT. You think it is bad now with the housing? Now lets throw SS on top of it. Then more HelthCare increases at record levels. Going to bea bumpy ride. Good luck to Obama.

Best part abuot today? No more ads. I went to a funeral yesterday and was speaking to a friend of a friend from Germany. They only have ads on from 6pm-8pm and they can't attack the person. Something I wish our system would also do....integrity, honesty, and common fucking sense is out the window in this country.

in my professional opinion (im married) the state / federal government should have no say about marriage. there should be no involvement whatsoever. to me it seems akin to state sanctioned/supported religious dogma.

do i need a license to love and live the rest of my life with someone?

its a problem of semantics and from that perspective, its a 'marriage' of church and state.

bwahaha! i made a funny.

but really, fuck prop 8 (and all marriage related ballot items.)

Yep, good point, I was sick of that too.

The highlight for me was the fact that race turned into a non-issue on election day. I moved to NYC 10 years ago, and after 5 years in the Bronx and 5 years in Harlem I don't even notice skin color anymore. People are just people.

This was one of the few bonds or allocations that passed.

So far we are passing the high speed rail ($9.95 bil), children's hospital ($980 mil), and veteran's bonds ($900 mil). Together, including interest, we will have to pay back $23.6 billion on these three bonds alone.

Anyone who's driven between SF and LA in the last few years know we NEED to do something, and soon. A 350 mile long traffic jam is not an option.

I have driven between the Sacramento area and LA more times than I care to count over the last 15 years and I-5 is always moving at full speed (unless there is an accident - a couple times over the years) until you are in the immediate vicinity of a large city.

Hey, I hope this does well as I would also love to be able to have an alternative to flying down to LA or taking a car to Pittsburg and then taking BART to SF, but I really don't see the advantage here. It would take me about 30-45 minutes to get to the station from my house. I can get to Pittsburg in less than an hour. BART fares from Pittsburg to SF airport (about the longest stretch of BART): $16. Round trip.

There is no way that prices will be low enough to make sense for shorter trips (SAC to SF) with existing cheap BART fares once you get close to SF. And for longert trips, say, Sac to San Diego, look at all the stops it makes.

http://www.cahighspeedrail.ca.gov/

No way it is competitive with flying if you are in a hurry. The only thing it does is get you out of a car, but is probably going to be hideously expensive for a trip of equivalent time, especially if a family is going somewhere. For instance, booking an end-to-end trip on the Acela train on the East Coast (the closest thing we have to HSR in the US, apparently) would cost a minimum of $250 for a round trip tomorrow and takes at least 6.5 hours. For one person. Try a family - the costs would be prohibitive for most for what could instead be less than a day's drive.

This isn't about equal rights, it's about special rights. I'm not gay, and I can't marry a man. Neither can a gay man. So, there, we are equal.

By that logic miscegenation laws weren't unconstitutional either. A black person couldn't marry a white person, but neither could white people marry black. So everyone was equal, right?

It's sad that Proposition 8 looks like it will pass, but I'm glad to see some of the posters here didn't support it.

As for Obama, I hope he can live up to the enormous expectations we have put on him. Even if he doesn't though, I'm very relieved to see that the American people (and my state, which "went blue" this time after being a solidly red state for the past 40 years) were not fooled by the politics of fear again. That was the biggest highlight of the election for me. I really hope this abolishes the idea that dissent equals treason, which quite a few of Bush's (in 2004) and McCain's ads used. Enough of that bullshit.

Haha... what a retarded spin you've put on this.

No, you're wrong. People want the law applied equally to everyone, regardless of their sexual preference.

And there isn't a SINGLE reason not to allow it.

talking about games, i am thinking of getting a wireless headphones, any one has experience with this gadget? like some input.

Don't bother; I've head multiple sets of wireless headphones in the past and they are always very prone to interference and there is ALWAYS at least some low-level static.

For the same reason nobody recommends wireless speakers, nobody recommends wireless headphones. Degradation in audio fidelity is not worth the convenience.

It's truly amazing and sad that Prop8 passed.

It passed by a very narrow margin. There are also a few million more votes to be counted. I don't think the outcome will change, but at least people should know that for every person in California that doesn't support freedom and equality for all, the person standing next to them does.

I think we have (and continue to) bond ourselves into fiscal oblivion.

I think most people share the concern. This was one of the few bonds or allocations that passed. Anyone who's driven between SF and LA in the last few years know we NEED to do something, and soon. A 350 mile long traffic jam is not an option.

Unless of course they try to cram you in like airplane seating, in which case you are better off taking a plane anyways.

Nothing could ever be as bad as flying. Even if the seating is the same, you still don't have to deal with all the other crap. I'm pretty sure the routes and stops have already been worked out, as well.

That is a new level of convoluted logic for me.

You do realize that prior to prop 8 you COULD marry a man, gay or not, if you so desired right? I have no effing clue why you would....but you could.

Marriage in the eyes of the law is nothing more than a legally binding contract for tax and property rights and nothing more. Prop 8 legislates morality...religious morality at that and will be struck down as discriminatory as it already has been in the past.

the stretch here is your pandering to blacks while at the same time making fun of james earl jones. keep digging a deeper hole budy.

I wasn't making fun of blacks, you asshat, I was making fun of those who voted for Obama strictly because of his excellent speeches and disticntive and pleasant oratory style. The best example I could come up with was James Earl Jones, who also has a very pleasant, distictive voice (voices of/for - Darth Vader, Lion King, "This is CNN", Thulsa Doom and his awesome speeches in Conan the Barbarian, and too many others to list here) but is not a political figure - and I basically said that "if you are voting based on speeches, let's vote for the man with one of the most distictive and awesome sounding voices in the world today".

Do you have no analytical or critical thinking skills at all?

What pisses me off about statements like this is the ignorance concerning what it takes to actually pass laws and bills in this country. He wasn't able to do anything without a MAJORITY vote and if I'm not mistaken the majority has been Democrat for quite some time.

Oh god oh god oh god oh god.

I think the best way to put this nicely is that the legislative branch was under the control of republicans for 6 of the 8 Bush years....you ignorant bastard.

With the financial crisis and the USA involved in military actions in at least three countries right now, the USA is going to fall into a hole for the next 5 to 10 years. Let the democrats have the presidency for those 5 or 10 years of pain and anguish, so people associate democrats with pain and anguish.

You listed Powell and Rice as suitable alternatives for Obama, joking throw in James Earl Jones, and then you said "It's not a race thing"?

Um, the point was these are also PEOPLE OF THE SAME RACE that I WOULD vote for. It isn't racial that I voted for someone other than Obama in this election (as accused), as I tried to explain.

If I said it wasn't racial and said I would have voted for Hillary, how does that explain my point?
