ATI Driver Hotfixes [Oct 29, 2008, 10:58 am ET] – Share – Viewing Comments
AMD Customer Care announces the release of new hotfixes for ATI Radeon
accelerators for both Windows XP and Vista, though an accompanying note stresses
that these are unsupported releases. The updates offer performance improvements
for the DirectX 9 version of Far Cry 2 on CrossFire compatible systems,
for the DirectX 10 version of Far Cry 2 on both single and CrossFire compatible
systems, and for the DirectX 10 and DirectX 10.1 version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:
Clear Sky on both single and CrossFire configurations at higher resolutions.

Who said I'm a fanboy of AMD? I couldn't care less about brands, whether it's video cards or CPUs. Whenever I build a system, I determine what will give me the most bang for the buck, without any brand loyalty. The only reason I haven't had a Nvidia since the GeForce4 is that the last few times I upgraded, it came at a time when ATI hardware made more sense. Who knows, by the time DX11 or 12 is out, I may get a Nvidia card.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I haven't had a single problem with incompatibility or glitches in my 5+ years of owning ATI cards. Like Vista, incompatibilities with ATI cards are grossly exaggerated.
As to value and performance, it depends on what's more important to the user, really. Comparable framerate at a lower cost, but with incompatibility headaches, glitches and artifacts; doesn't sound like a good deal to me.

Is the patch that makes AMD products not suck?This driver only affects their graphics cards, which haven't sucked for 5+ years (back when they were ATI). The R300 took the market by storm when it came out, and the R700 (their current flagship) offers performance close to Nvidia's latest offerings at a much better price - it's also the only series to support DX10.1. I don't think there's ever been a better value than the Radeon 4850.

Clear Sky got 10.1 support in patch 1.5.06
Hmm, I'll have to give these a try... I'm glad to see Clear Sky getting some attention as well.
PS - Since when was Clear Sky DX10.1? That's the first I've ever heard of it.
