It's an abuse of the system to pre-order the game and accept a gift for doing so?

No it's an abuse of the system to pre-order a game, play Rome for a few months and then cancel the pre-order for Empire (which also revokes the free game, you don't get to keep it if you cancel the pre-order).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that sounds like what you were wanting to do.

People like you that abuse the system are the reason we have to put up with shit like DRM, or lose bonuses on pre-orders, or even possibly lose the ability to cancel pre-orders.

It's an abuse of the system to pre-order the game and accept a gift for doing so? And why would I wait for months to cancel the pre-order?

The deal is a gift if you pre-order. If they wanted to give this away with the purchase of the game they would have made that part of the deal.

You're a fool if you believe it's an abuse.

Hmm sounds like it's worth pre-ordering, as long as I can cancel the pre-order...

So in other words...don't pre-order just to play Rome for the next 4 months and then cancel the pre-order near launch day.

$55 in Europe, plus tax makes it $65 - convert that to sterling and it comes out at £43. Meanwhile it's £25 on Game.co.uk (with free delivery and guarantee you'll receive it for release day), which means the Steam price is a complete piss-take... even including Rome: Total War only takes it up to £35.

No thanks.

Or people like me who played a warez version of RTW and loved it but never got around to buying it. I'll probably do this.

Talk about an early preorder...

I agree with Quboid about these previous game preorder bonuses. Why not let people play the preordered game a day or two early? A discount is always good too, and Steam has done it with Orange Box, Far Cry 2, and Left 4 Dead (and possibly others). Maybe that's the best "bribe."

Quboid the thing is they are going after the customer who never played any of their games before. Obviously the real fans are going to preorder the game regardless of any extra content, perhaps they might give away the free copy of Rome to a friend, ensuring that another potential customer is created. This is a win win situation.
I have a nifty blue line!

No no, Rome is to get you warmed up and ready - you play it now, until Empire is released.

I dislike this, because anyone enough of a fan to preorder is probably already going to have Rome. It was the same with BiA:HH, they gave Hill 30 free. Far Cry 2 too I think, they were giving away Far Cry. I really do appreciate the sentiment and by all means, please try to bribe me into preordering, but there needs to be a better reward than another copy of what you probably already have.

What a singular offer, most peculiar. <removes pince-nez for effect>

It makes me wonder what is the yet unannounced deal-breaker in Empire:TW that spurned this deal into reality, as Rome is a great title ... you can almost smell the bacon of war.

Please let it not be SecuROM or some other moronic manufactured impediment.

Wow this is neat, although with such a vast game like Empire, who could spend the extra hours and hours playing Rome.

Still a nice offer. Im probably going to preorder this although Im not a fan of preordering games, this is one which definitely cannot go wrong!
