Dead Space Sequel and More

The Cut Scene Blog on Variety.com has some bits of tid from an interview with EA Games label president Frank Gibeau and Dead Space executive producer Glenn Schofield discussing Dead Space from an intellectual property perspective. They describe how Dead Space was born out of their recommitment to creating new IPs, and a little background on how such a property is created and green-lit. The article also includes word that Dead Space novels and toys are being discussed, as is a Dead Space movie (though the author sagely points out that "most new videogames are talked about in Hollywood as movies. The question is whether a deal gets done"). Juxtaposed with all the talk of creating new IPs in a world of sequels, the conversation also touches on, well, sequels, saying EA is toying with the idea of a follow up to Battlefield: Bad Company, and a "sequel idea planned" for Army of Two (spoiling all out fun by using up all the Army of Two 2 jokes), while a more definitive comment was made about Dead Space, saying a "pretty casual" mention that a "Dead Space" sequel is already in the works though they point out this could still be axed in the unlikely event the first game completely tanks.

Wow bold statement. Did you play it on the PC or console? Some of the screens and videos Ive seen look so damn cool, but I hope the controls arent as terrible as reviewers have said.

I jsut dont see this game doing well on the pc, the main reason being their bullshit DRM. 5 max installs period! well no one in their right mind is going to buy a game that cant recover installs. they lost my sale along with serveral other good games from the assholes at EA.

I'm currently playing and enjoying this on the PS3. I am not aware of any control issues aside from the usual debate about which is better, controller or mouse/keyboard. While I'm sure control is more precise in the PC version there is nothing that I have encountered in the console version that should cause anyone any concern. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who is considering getting it.

Controls on the PC are actually pretty dire. There's something like a 500-1000ms lag between moving the mouse and the game actually noticing. Very distracting.

Runs very smoothly at 2560*1600 on my 8800GTS though. It just happens to play like my controls are connected via a server in China...

Wait...is there lag because the graphics are set so high? If you set the eye candy to the 'craptastic' setting, does the lag go away? A 1/2 to 1 second lag will mean its going to suck donkey balls on the PC.

No, there's no appreciable difference in lag from 800x600 to 2560x1600. 2560*1600 is silky smooth, so it'd be very odd for that to be the problem anyway.

I guess I was a bit harsh saying 500-1000ms though, it's maybe not quite that high, maybe more like 300; it's certainly high enough to be very distracting. It feels like they're trying to replicate the craptastic aiming you get with a console controller, only with a mouse :/

Ooh, yeah, that helps lots, pretty much resolves it for me, thanks. What an unfortunate default, do they not test these things?

Also: while I was testing this, I was randomly flipped to the desktop 3 times in as many minutes. It appears they hate focus-follows-mouse, maybe combined with multimonitor.

I'm sorry, what? Is creating a new intellectual property now a challenge for these game developers that are paid and hyped vastly more than independent developers who don't suffer from a lack of new ideas? They have more funding and more dedicated resources to create something wonderous and they had to recommit to creating new IPs?!

The best game ive played all year, period.

Agreed. The opening sequence to the game, while you're docking with the Ishumura is friggin amazing. That scene is something that PC gamers will be loading up each time they upgrade hardware.

Certain games really nail a visual appearance and Dead Space has some stunning visuals. I wish they'd done more stuff like that through the game. After I beat the game I restarted it on impossible to play with the new suit and that intro took my breath away. After playing through the game I'd forgotten how amazing that opening scene looked.

Etched in my mind. I plan on buying this game soon, I rented it and despite being a singleplayer game with no multiplayer, I'm missing it already.

Tearing aliens apart is too much fun. Plus I never touched several weapons when I played and I'm hearing about how much people like those weapons. I loved the ripper though, that thing was so much fun, stasis, SCRRRREEECH, Legs, SCREEEECH, ARMS, SCREECCH, HEAD, step back and watch the body slowly twist while in stasis only to come falling down after time resumes.

So friggin awesome.

Oh and I'm talking about buying this on the 360, not paying for the PC version in it's current form. Limited activations + BS DRM = no purchase for my PC dollars.

A new intellectual property that is 100% ripped off from all the other science fiction/horror movies and games that came before it.

Turn VSync off and all control issues go away. I'm having ZERO problems with the controls this way, try it before bitching.

A new intellectual property that is 100% ripped off from all the other science fiction/horror movies and games that came before it.

The story was not the most original concept but the actual gameplay is absolutely original. The core aspect of this game is the combat. The combat system is "the game", the story is icing on the cake, but the core game is fun. You get to chop up a variety of different aliens with a bunch of different weapons while wearing a cool suit and using stasis and kinesis. Make sure you look at what the real IP of this is. It's not the dead space universe, it's the gameplay.

This game appears to be the spiritual successor of Doom in my mind. I think this is what they wanted to make in doom 3, and this is what I wanted to play. This game is a land mark in gaming in my opinion.

I loved how Tycho (penny arcade) tried to explain the big change in this as damage from shapes. You're firing vertical and horizontal lines that cut through enemies instead of just plugging them with bullets.

I can't understand how someone can look at this game and say, bah, I've done this all before. This game is so much more than that. I guess using certain weapons it could feel like the same, the pulse rifle wouldn't feel too much different, the plasma cutter is pretty close to what we've seen in the past until you turn it side ways...
