Dead Space Sequel and More

The Cut Scene Blog on Variety.com has some bits of tid from an interview with EA Games label president Frank Gibeau and Dead Space executive producer Glenn Schofield discussing Dead Space from an intellectual property perspective. They describe how Dead Space was born out of their recommitment to creating new IPs, and a little background on how such a property is created and green-lit. The article also includes word that Dead Space novels and toys are being discussed, as is a Dead Space movie (though the author sagely points out that "most new videogames are talked about in Hollywood as movies. The question is whether a deal gets done"). Juxtaposed with all the talk of creating new IPs in a world of sequels, the conversation also touches on, well, sequels, saying EA is toying with the idea of a follow up to Battlefield: Bad Company, and a "sequel idea planned" for Army of Two (spoiling all out fun by using up all the Army of Two 2 jokes), while a more definitive comment was made about Dead Space, saying a "pretty casual" mention that a "Dead Space" sequel is already in the works though they point out this could still be axed in the unlikely event the first game completely tanks.

If I were a slave, I'd be forced to buy these games. I'm not. It's my decision.

Yes, it is YOUR descision to stay being a slave.

So, have fun playing *nothing* this season, Kajetan, since you're a slave to your own stupid negativity.
Slaves cannot fathom, that life is possible without chains, because they fear to loose the illusion, that the security in living in chains is better than the not-predictable freedom.

I have plenty of DRM-free games to play. I do not need EA or other Major Publishers to satisfy my gaming needs. In terms of gaming, i am free

Gotta say WOW as well. Great game. Only say maybe 27% through it but I'll be eagerly waiting for the next if it keeps up throughout the game.

I originally was going to get it for the PC but decided not to hasle with the DRM crap, and some issues people where stating right away, so said screw it and bought the X360 version. Definatly one of the top 3 game purchases I've made all year.

Yes it has DRM, activation based and so on.

Forgot activation limits too. It's essentially a long term rental policy.

And you can rent it also.

Buy.
Don't buy.
Rent.

those are the choices. (rental is only possible on consoles)

Yep, the game's DRM detects any piracy related software such as Daemon Tools or WinRar then it proceeds to wipe your system. After wiping your system it then attempts to beat you up and steal your lunch money. It can also be activated one time and one time only, afterwards the original disc will explode.

Yes it has DRM, activation based and so on. Buy it or don't buy it. Either way it's a great game.

I just finished Dead Space today. Wow. INCREDIBLE game.

It is an incredible game. Did you start a new game yet with the new unlocked stuff? That opening sequence is just stunning the 2nd time around. After playing the full game through it caught me by surprise just how beautiful the very beginning of the game is.

I feel bad for the dumbasses who don't want to buy it because of DRM. I hope they have fun missing out on the best game this year.

but then you go right around and buy it for the fucking console, thus proving to the publisher that it really is not worth it to develop for the PC anymore.

Way to go.

Never heard of renting? $5-$10 depending on where you are getting it from to play the whole thing.

Great value.

This is such a dumb post, how did you even type it up without thinking "Shit maybe I shouldn't post this because people will make fun of me"? Everything is derivative, the number of truly original works out there is probably so miniscule as to go entirely unnoticed.

It's a brand new IP from EA. Yes, from EA. That's a pretty big step for EA considering the past 5 years. The game itself is also pretty damned engrossing and the story is fairly well done. Why don't you try it before you make your accusations in the future? Or are you just one of those retards who says "Argh DRM SCREW U EA U RIPPED OFF EVENT HORIZON & SS2 NEWAYS!!!!".

A new intellectual property that is 100% ripped off from all the other science fiction/horror movies and games that came before it.

The story was not the most original concept but the actual gameplay is absolutely original. The core aspect of this game is the combat. The combat system is "the game", the story is icing on the cake, but the core game is fun. You get to chop up a variety of different aliens with a bunch of different weapons while wearing a cool suit and using stasis and kinesis. Make sure you look at what the real IP of this is. It's not the dead space universe, it's the gameplay.

This game appears to be the spiritual successor of Doom in my mind. I think this is what they wanted to make in doom 3, and this is what I wanted to play. This game is a land mark in gaming in my opinion.

I loved how Tycho (penny arcade) tried to explain the big change in this as damage from shapes. You're firing vertical and horizontal lines that cut through enemies instead of just plugging them with bullets.

I can't understand how someone can look at this game and say, bah, I've done this all before. This game is so much more than that. I guess using certain weapons it could feel like the same, the pulse rifle wouldn't feel too much different, the plasma cutter is pretty close to what we've seen in the past until you turn it side ways...

Controls on the PC are actually pretty dire. There's something like a 500-1000ms lag between moving the mouse and the game actually noticing. Very distracting.

Turn VSync off and all control issues go away. I'm having ZERO problems with the controls this way, try it before bitching.

I'm sorry, what? Is creating a new intellectual property now a challenge for these game developers...
