Will Wright on Spore DRM

Kotaku has a piece up quoting Will Wright answering a question about the controversial Digital Rights Management in Spore, his life simulation. Specifically regarding Spore he touches on the issues user's may have with its DRM, and he comments: "It was something I probably should have tuned into more. It was a corporate decision to go with DRM on Spore." He also discusses copy protection in general, opining that the current state of affairs is "an interim solution to an interim problem," going on to say: "You have games like Battlefield Heroes coming out where the idea is you give away the game and sell upgrades, which works more in the Asian markets where you need to monetize it over the Internet. I think we’re in this uncomfortable spot in going from what’s primarily a brick and mortar shrink-wrapped product to what eventually will become more of an online monetization model."

No longer relevant? Spore is shaping up to be one of the biggest successes of the year and the designer is somehow no longer relevant? I must be quite a tool because I don't follow your logic.

This further highlights why industry fawns like Wright and Molyneux are no longer relevant - They have little or no contact and knowledge of the game outside the initial design & promotion phases, so why do we even care what they think?

The source is directly between his large buttocks. You'll have to find some sort of device to spread them and delve inside to locate it though.

Spore lost more money due to people not buying it because of DRM, than they did from people pirating it.

I get the impression that Wright is pleading innocent by virtue of ignorance - plausible deniability perhaps? I also infer from his comment that it was something he should have "tuned into more" that he might have tried to convince EA not to use it had he been aware of exactly what kind of DRM was going to be used. I would tend to believe him, since it seems logical that the developer is not consulted on which type of DRM will be used.

The developers had zero input to this. I cant see EA letting anyone have the DRM decision. EA will simply blame the pirates. I bet a good portion of the pirates bought the game anyway. I know if id bought spore i'd play it with a hack to circumvent the online auth.
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I guess Cliffy was right, you really are only as good as your last game.

Then factor in the draconian DRM

I for one am sick of attitudes like Will Wright. I was walking outside of my apartment today, and a bunch of game designers flew by in their Porsches, racing each other. If they would stop speeding around with their gold chains hanging off their neck, maybe they would make a good game.

By the way folks, Spore is already a million seller. Anyone who thinks the game is bombing is lost in their own little dream world.

the problem is kids don't buy it, they just steal it. That is clearly and obviously the problem.

Hey, let's all rag on Will Wright, legendary creator of SimCity and The Sims because EA put DRM in his game. He's a game designer, he probably had no say in this. Jeez, I guess Cliffy was right, you really are only as good as your last game.

He should have dealt with this issue publicly the moment it came up... NOT over a month later. What a tool.

I'm so tired of hearing the term 'monetize' when applied to talking about games.

How about, "Here's my cash, now give me a game and fuck off."

Is that enough 'monetizing' for you? No, of course not. What the hell is wrong with the brick and mortar approach? You produce a product, I buy it, transaction ended. Finito.

"It was a corporate decision to go with DRM on Spore."
Not really a huge revelation there.

Spore lost more money due to people not buying it because of DRM, than they did from people pirating it.

While that statement is pure conjecture, the claims of developers of the horrible effect of piracy are as well, so I guess it's a wash. Wacko

You'd think they would "get it" after awhile.
