WoW Paid Customization Coming

WorldOfWar.Net has a tidbit from BlizzCon, where Jay Allen Brack was asked about indications from World of Warcraft game files that paid character customization may be coming to Blizzard's MMORPG. After seeming to avoid the question at first, he eventually confirmed that paid-for character customization is indeed in the works, though no further details are provided.

yeah I should give them more credit then that, It still sounds very shady but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until they officially announce their plans on that.

Oh wait, isn't SC2 going to be sold as 3 games for $150 total or something...
I don't believe for a second that each part will cost $50. I'd imagine $30 each ($90 total) or $50/$20/$20 (again $90); any more and it would simply be ridiculous.

The article says "though no further details are provided." , so everything we're saying is all just speculation. I would assume it would be much more then the things you list to get people to actually want to pay for it.

The point is that a minor change can have a large ripple effect, and this is potentially the start of WoW micro-transactions. That, plus whatever development time it takes to actually make this stuff, and lets be honest, whenever Blizzard spends time on something it takes them a good while to finish it. That spells out less "free" features in your future patches as far as I see it.

And yeah I played it, but not anymore, I just hate to see them adopt a business practice like this. As long as they keep this bright idea out of SC2 and D3 I'm happy. Oh wait, isn't SC2 going to be sold as 3 games for $150 total or something...

WTF do you mean 'I have more money to waste then you so I look better attitude crap?

Have you even played WoW? By the time you put on all your armor you can't even see your skin/face/etc unless you have your helm option off. And when the fuck did changing your skin color or sex have anything to do with a 'better then you' attitude?

Get some common sense D4rkKnight and quit grasping, as the stuff that does matter can be done in game for free with the next patch.

The only thing people give a damn about in WoW is the GEAR YOU ARE WEARING, not what color you skin is this week, or what face you now have on. FFS people.

Well the bright side of this, I hope will be different looks of chars. Some people wont pay, other will and I think this will benefit the community.I disagree about adding the cost to the base monthly fee. When you do that its like raising taxes, everyone has to pay. Extra gives you an option not to pay and that is a good thing. Trust me I can hear it now if they forced a pay increase on everyone. Sorry, if you work hard and have a lot of money that is the benefit of working hard.

What exactly makes them more dedicated to the game...more so than willing to spend more money?
Questing to achieve things is more dedicated, rather than simply typing in your credit card details. I can understand developing addons for MMOs but monetising customisation? A little bit too far. It's not like horse armour where it's only for your benefit and no-one need know - in an MMO you're constantly being compared to others. At least with equipment you've worked hard for it, not simply thrown cash at it.

I can understand Blizzard wanting to make money but personally I expect more to be included in a game with monthly fees - these extra fees go too far, imo. It just adds a division between those that can spare the money and those that can't.

Spending more of your money seems like a pretty good indication of commitment and dedication to a game to me.

EQ2 allows you to change your appearance at any time (not race/gender..class doesn't count), but thats besides the point. I just think if your paying $15 a month, something like this should be given to you in the monthly updates as a free bonus, instead of instilling this elitist "I have more money to waste then you so I look better" attitude.

I guess I just expect more from a game that charges a monthly fee. The way Blizzard works, if this was to be free it probably wouldn't be finished until 2012, so hey if you wanna pay you benefit from the charging.

Sounds like something that should be free with your $15 subscription.

What MMOs allow you to change your class/race/gender/face for free?

Well, the last time I checked, Blizzard is a for-profit business. When I create a toon, I spend a lot of time agonizing over the little details of his/her appearance. It's not like they're letting people pay real money for better weapons or armor...it's all pretty harmless, and I'm sure overall, it's not going to amount to any significant percentage of their income.

And now you have the nerv to ask me for MORE?!

Apparently the concepts of "optional" and "voluntary" are foreign to some. If the options offered, whatever they are, aren't what you're wanting then don't buy it.
Oh well now that you put out that way, I'll guess I'm choosing the "option" of not buying it...

You decide.

Did the FANS CHEER as much with the news about the paid character customization in WoW, I wonder.

I don't even think this one was announced. And I'm not even sure what this whole customisation thing is anyway? Does anyone? I'm assuming it's for major changes to the character like what you get at character creation (gender, look, etc). But no one knows at the moment. If it is what I think it is, I can live without it.

People pay for server transfers and name changes ... but do you think those should be for free too?

Prado went through the three options they were considering (not letting the crowd know which way they had gone) and the FANS CHEERED for the option to make 3 epic campaigns, but selling them separately. The other two got "boo"s and silence respectively.

I have a feeling that one was all about how they worded it.
