Out of the Blue

A couple more tweaks can be found in the forums, once again thanks to Frans. Posting options have been clarified, they can now be seen while editing a post, and editing a post multiple times will not result in multiple "edited" tags.

As always, cool stuff.

Using its 27cm aperture telescope, it is observing many tens of thousands of stars, looking for the slight drop in light caused by the transit of a planet.

Of course one of the more exciting aspects of this stuff is that it is being done with a telescope no bigger than this:

http://www.telescope.com/control/product/~category_id=cassegrains/~pcategory=telescopes/~product_id=24330

One caveat is that the sensitivity of the CCD detectors used means that your camera is going to cost a good deal more than that scope. But its exciting nonetheless that cutting edge research can still be done with amateur equipment.

Edit: the "Follow Up" link is redundant. CNN never posts good images (too low res and compressed) for this kind of thing.
