Harvey Smith's New First-Person RPG

Gamasutra reports on Harvey Smith’s keynote at the AGDC Game Career Summit, where the former Origin, ION Storm, and Midway designer described an unnamed immersive first-person RPG he's working on at Arkane Austin. During the keynote he said, "Arkane as a company is very focused on immersive first-person experiences," and described his own design philosophy: "My focus is very much around games like Deus Ex." They spoke with him after the talk and he spoke of his happiness at returning to a project in the vein of Deus Ex and Thief: Deadly Shadows.

Harvey Smith could be the last fucking developer on fucking earth and I'd never play another one of his games.

It's sad that Arkane is going to get fucked over by his brand of development. That's a(nother) good studio he's going to ruin.

And the publically stated reason for that has always been: made to fit the xbox.

Memory size is a bit better nowadays...however, we seem to need at least 4 or more textures on every model, so even then the 360's 512mb seems cramped.

Which is sad; dx2 would have been much better with larger level sizes. As it was, it had some good mechanics, but they were too simplified to have much fun in the cramped conditions.

Arkane is a solid studio. I'm sure Mr. Smith is just going to inject a little of his magic. How about some sort of universal energy system for magic, melee and archers? Yeah, that'd be sweet!

Arkane studios made Arx Fatalis right? I really enjoyed that game.... here's to hoping his new game is as good as Arx.

DX2 wasn't bad, it was childish.
Compared to DX it's like having a water pistol where daddy has an AK-47.

I would hardly call Thief 3 a tragedy, granted it wasn't as good as the game looking glass wanted to make and some of the levels were a bit small to help cross platform development for the console toy versions, but that aside it was a pretty good game. T3 was worth playing for The cradle level alone.
DX:IW on the other hand was biggest, stinkiest un-flushable turd of a game ever and should serve as a warning beacon for anything else Smith touches in the future.

The only reason this made the news was hopefully to warn people that a turd is comming out from this clown.
Seriously the only reason I would want to hear about this failure is to know what game NOT to buy.
