Mount & Blade Combat Details

The Mount & Blade Website looks to generate enthusiasm for the upcoming retail release of Mount & Blade, TaleWorlds Entertainment's medieval action/RPG by outlining how the game's combat system stands out from the competition. They quote lead programmer Armagan Yavuz saying: "What separates Mount & Blade from other action RPG’s is that that most RPG’s have more statistics-based combat, while we use skill-based combat." He goes on to say: "Even though the damage you do is influenced by the statistics of your character and his weapon, it is also based on physics formulas: the energy, speed and impact angle of the weapon. For example, if you are rapidly approaching your enemy while you’re mounted on a fast-moving horse, the damage will be much greater since the momentum of your horse is added to the speed of your weapon's swing."

Ant: The Lord of the Rings mod is actually called "The Last Days." The official forum for the mod is at http://mbx.streetofeyes.com/index.php?board=20.0.

@Ant: Either look on the official forums (there's a link to them from www.taleworlds.com) or plug "mount and blade repository" into google for a big database of mods. The LoTR mod is called The Final Days and is pretty solid. It's only available for betas up to 0.89 but I think they're considering porting it to 1.0 when it comes out.

Try getting into a battle with a huge amount of guys, where you're totally outnumbered and your skill with your weapon is the only thing that'll see you through. Also, make sure you play it on the difficulty where it automatically saves. If you lose the battle you'll wind up with nothing, in the gutters. If you win, there's a ton of glory for you and your men.

That'll get you into it

I would LOVE multiplayer Mount and Blade. It's really like the Counterstrike of melee games - fights are short, brutal and largely down to your own skills. Not going to happen with this version though. Hopefully this one is commercially successful enough to prompt a sequel with a mp component

@Nomaar: Yeah, the last round of betas really fleshed out the single player campaign. It's still a little anemic but it's a lot more satisfying than it was in 0.8X and earlier.

Here's some of what you can do in Mount & Blade:

1) Engage in mounted, infantry or ranged combat.
2) Fight alone, lead small warbands or recruit and command an army of 100 or more, with soldiers that will die, get wounded and advance in rank as you go along.
3) Recruit a cadre of lieutenants (hero-type characters) for whom you select equipment and dole out skills.
4) Gain enough fame to own a castle.
5) Engage in siege combat, either behind the walls or as the attacker scaling walls.
6) Trade goods, do quests, pillage villages.
7) Choose from a staggering number of mods, including a Lord of the Rings mod that is considered the cream of the crop and adds a lot of new strategic elements to the game.

I don't see the game as repetitive.

Yeah if you don't really like the combat, it's prolly not enough game for most people.

I played it over the weekend. It's pretty neat. I enjoyed it, but it is repetitive. It needs multiplayer.

This game would simply be awesome with multiplayer. I agree with your assessment though, despite how "ground breaking, skill based, etc" this game's combat is...it is extremely repetitive. Been in a few fights, been in them all.

I love how the press release states "today revealed additional details." Yeah, you know, about the combat system that's been around for years in the game that anyone who has downloaded the beta knows about.

Anyway, no need to generate enthusiasm...it's already high enough!
