NCsoft Cuts? Tabula Rasa in Trouble?

GamesIndustry.biz reports a rumor that NCsoft is planning on cutting about 50 positions from its European office in Brighton, reversing an expansion from just a year ago (story), saying that this is the result of the cancellation of an unannounced MMOG the studio had been creating. The report is attributed to "a number of sources close to the company," and the story also includes speculation that Tabula Rasa is in trouble, saying: "It is also thought that the company's troubled MMO Tabula Rasa will be discontinued at some point in the coming months due to continuing poor subscriber numbers."

@ Mr Falcon

Your theory falls apart in the face of the fact that there were shooter based client-server distributed games long before RPGs became the dominant MMO genre.

Air Warrior, Aces High, Fighter Ace, Multiplayer BattleTech, and CyberStrike (among others) all had physics engines and per-polygon hit detection. I played Air Warrior on an Amiga, in 1987, on a 2400 baud modem to GEnie. The processing power of the client and the server are not the issue. The bandwidth of the network connection is not the issue. The genre of the game is not the issue. The skill of the people crafting the game is what matters.

Oh man!!! Those were the days. Did you play Aliens through Gamestorm as well? Man, now THAT was a ton of fun while it lasted.
Game developers are just human beings who happen to make games for a living. If you want to hold us up to higher standards of conduct, then go ahead

Considering per-poly hitdetection wasnt introduced until what, Doom 3, I find that hard to believe.

considering it was per-pixel hitdetection that was introduced by D3, thats why you are wrong

per-poly detection has been around since 3d games have.. as in, a long long fucking time

Mechwarrior 1 had that shit back in the 80s

Was Tabula Rasa ever not in trouble? Maybe early beta builds.

Bah, you beat me to it.

If there was a template for building an MMORPG it would be called Tabula Rasa. It has everything that is required to be an MMORPG but nothing to make it unique or interesting to play.

Bored to tears by this one.

I gave the free trial a shot. Wasn't worth the bandwidth.

Take Crysis, which can hardly handle games of 32 players, and try that with a thousand players.

And the games you mention again fail to qualify as massive; I played Cyberstrike (damn fun game), but there were at most dozens of players in a game.

If your going to build a FPS-like MMO, why not just build a true FPS MMO?
for the same reason traditional mmo's have the combat they have; systems cannot function with thousands of players and the complexity of modern shooters, IE physics engines and poly-based hitcoding. It's just too much computing for a server to handle.

Tabula Rasa was fun in the earlier beta when things were easy to kill and you could whip through the zones and quests.

A month or two before beta ended they made everything harder and the game suddenly became vastly less fun.

Planetside and I'm sorry to say that it's fairly boring. after playing it for 3 years I can say that though I gotta admit it was a great game.

It is always ironic when someone says a game is "boring" after playing it for 3 years. I'd sure hope that a game would get boring after playing it 1000s of hours, lol. There are many great games on my "All Time" list, but I'd be bored to death with most after having played them for a few 100 hours, let alone 1000s. :-) But at least you finished the quote by saying it was a great game, heh. Some people here have talked about Tabula Rasa being underrated *which is up for debate*, but I truly think Planetside is THE most underrated MMO I've ever played.

Huxley looks like crap as well (think hgl) so no hope there..

I tend to agree. I was immensely looking forward to this game, because it reminded me in a way of Planetside, but after watching recent gameplay videos it isn't looking promising whatsoever.

I played Tabula Rasa for a few days, at the very end of open beta, after looking forward to it for years. Ironically the developers were saying "The game failed because too many people played during beta when it wasn't finished, and didn't buy the final product". But in reality they meant to say "The game failed because too many people played for free during beta and saw how awful it was, and didn't pay us money for the final product".

I even tried to get back into Tabula Rasa a few months later to see if it had improved, but I did some research on the game's official forums and by talking with players, and the general consensus was that the game was a major grind. I guess they didn't have enough "content" and people were growing bored, so they miraculously fixed it by....making the existing content take twice as long to get through, instead of adding more. When many believed the game was a grind before that change, you now have a catastrophe afterwards.

Not surprised at all to see this game already in talks of being in trouble.

The Champions publisher is 2K, at least until EA takes over. LAWL! When NCSoft bought out Cryptic's half of CoH, they went their separate ways.

It would be fun as a $30ish single player game.. but as a MMOG it doesn't work

A local department store was selling off copies of Auto Assault for $1 the other day; I guess they need to make room in the bins for Tabula Rasa.

That comment is full of irony!

Tabula Rasa has to be one of the most underrated/under-appreciated mmos I've ever played.

No, it's just a piece of shit. The beta went from promising to deplorable during its run, and the game had zero chance for success when out of the blue they say, "All right, beta's over, we're going live in a month."

Game deserves to be axed.

Tabula Rasa has to be one of the most underrated/under-appreciated mmos I've ever played. It has so many improved features over some of the bigger name mmos. I really think it was bad timing more than anything.

I ended up canceling my sub because there wasn't anyone around to group with. And that was really the only reason I canceled.

Guess they're trying to focus on Champions and City of Heroes. Tabula Rasa had promise, but it was as empty as its name suggests.
"We can do this one of two ways. There's the hard way, which involves hours of discussion, tons of negotiation, half a dozen bribes, and no guarantee of success."
"What's the easy way?"
"Liberally placed high explosives."
