When it comes to art, nothing is really original. Everyone is inspired by something else they saw. So some guy thought the combine gas masks looked cool, and decided to use that shape for their helmets. Not really that big of a deal, IMHO.
And other than the shape and color of the helmet, they are really nothing alike. You are right that they are pretty generic though.

I know it's generic to a degree but those are too similar for comfort - it's not like it's that hard to come up with something original.
