Ensemble Closing?

Shacknews is reporting a rumor that Ensemble Studios (Age of Empires) will shut down completely following the release of the upcoming console RTS game Halo Wars (due next year). According to their anonymous sources, described as "multiple independent reports," employees not associated Halo Wars were let go today, while incentives have been offered to those staying on to complete that project. Neither Ensemble nor Microsoft have commented on this story at this point. Thanks nin.

It would have sold 200 million units if it weren't for pirates. Good job pirates, you killed Ensemble!

Sorry, but AoE 3 did that on its own.

Erm ... AoE 3 alone sold over 2 million units, not including the addons.

It sucked. Bad.

I purchased the collector's edition and was severely underwhelmed.

Do you have a single fact to back that up?

Overon -
That's the way that publishers and most upper management would like it to be. However the incentive is never, ever provided for workers to embrace such a system. Usually layoffs on a grand scale are a tell tale sign of the industry's biggest professional scar, which is complete mismanagement. It's amazing you can have such screw-ups on such a massive scale, but I've worked all over the industry for more than 10 years and that's what it comes down to.
There are a few great companies that have their heads on straight, but the vast majority of the industry is a bunch of mother fuckers who just scrape up as much cash as they can and leave their employees jobless time and again.

It seems that the video game industry is an industry of contractor like work. You get hired for a game and as soon as that game is done, like a contractor, you are gone.

AoE 2 was great for multiplayer and I loved the original as well. I couldn't get into AoE 3 either - it was to do with the 3D engine, which was too zoomed in; you could change it by editing text files but it still wasn't right.

NEway, this is rather surprising... especially considering they're developing Halo Wars currently. Strange.

1 and 2 at least, couldn't get into 3 much. Sad to see this happen as it was totally unexpected (at least to me). I wonder what caused it?
