Brad Wardell Interview

Stardock Interview Part 1 on Shacknews talks with Brad Wardell, focusing on the recent Gamer's Bill of Rights proposed by the Stardock CEO and Chris Taylor of Gas Powered Games (story). They dig for more details about the proposal, and in light of recent indications that is not getting widespread support in the industry (story), they inquire if this was just a publicity stunt: "Well certainly it's a publicity stunt. The idea is to get the word out there. Because at the end of the day, the only ones that are gonna really make this happen are the gamers themselves, if they start to make purchasing decisions based on those who would adhere to some kind of standard."

Regrettably most of the buyers are immature and ignorant. They dont care if the publisher or developer of a game rapes children, murders people, or treats their customers like dirtbags. They just want to play games (preferably dumbed down follow-ups).

I absolute love that statement, but I fear companies like EA aren't going to GET the message. They'll blame piracy and make DRM even MORE aggressive.

If only Brad was the CEO of EA, Activision, Ubisoft and all the other publishers.

Brad doesn't need to worry about keeping his job, because he is the king of his own hill. As CEO of independent developer and publisher Stardock, he answers to no one.

It's obvious at the very least that he loves what he does and wants the industry to be alive and kicking so he can keep his job

I don't think Brad is that worried about keeping his job. Their games may be considered "niche" by some, but their windows enhancement tools are absolutely the number 1 in the industry. They sell millions of those.

I think Brad just recognizes, like quite a few gamers do, where the industry is going / has already gone, and doesn't like it anymore than we do.

Admirable is the fact, that his love does not blind him ... unlike other devs, who still don't realize that it is NOT important to prevent someone from illegaly using your software. Instead, it is important to cater those who BOUGHT your software or might buy your software.

This is probably the first time I’ve ever been eager to read part 2 of a freakin' developer interview.

If we keep buying shovelware crap, EA and its ilk will keep making shovelware crap.

Ofcourse, if we stop buying their shit, they'll just scream piracy and move to the consoles.

Which leaves bigger market shares for new (and small) developers.

Brad Wardell is my hero.
