Far Cry 2: Lose A Buddy, Lose Content

Videogaming247 reports an interesting tidbit about Far Cry 2 they picked up at the Games convention. Apparently when one of the game's NPC "buddy" characters meets an untimely demise, the game content associated with that character dies as well. They quote Patrick Redding, the narrative head on the shooter follow-up: "That’s the price you pay for having buddies. When I unlock a buddy like that and then use him, either by getting involved in one of his missions… or by allowing him to come and rescue me, there’s always a risk that he could be killed. If he’s killed, he’s gone forever and the content associated with that character is no long available to me. So for example, any side quests that he’d be able to give me are no longer available."

To those that will inevitably complain, all I can say this is...you do have Save Games.

If you want to play it through without reloading, then that's your decision. You can always play the game again making sure to keep that Buddy alive.

I don't know if I like the sound of this. What if the "buddy" is killed in the game, but doing something stupid? We lose his extra content for the life of the game? WTF?

This is an awesome idea & quite innovative. This is exactly what more games need innovation!

Yeah, great idea. But if everyone dies then I guess there goes dozens of hours of side quests. Is that good? How about making them "invincible" like in Oblivion, until they give out their side quests?

In the course of a long game, who knows how many dozens of hours of side quests you're going to lose because of this.

And to the guy saying "use a savegame to restore the character", what if you don't know he died because it happened on the other side of the game world? Then what?

With so many reservations, it's obvious you don't care for it. So then don't play the fucking game, if you can't do something simple like keeping an NPC alive. Goddamn, how long have you been playing video games? Apparently not long enough. Fucking idiot.

I think it's a great idea. Invincible NPC's ruin the immersion/realism, and so many of them always feel disposable. I've even purposefully killed teammates (or allowed them to be killed) just b/c they got in the way too much.

But this makes you actually care about them as they serve a real purpose. Bravo.

People are always decrying modern PC games for not offering permanent ways to change the gameplay and more advanced features in the newer FPS games. Well there you go, two birds with one stone. I for one look forward to this feature, no risk means no satisfaction!

I would have to wait and see how well it pans out rather than get hyped up on this feature. If I have learned anything it's that, more times than not, awesome ideas generally only get half-assed treatment.

Exactly maybe the player might have to think about his next move and what he wants his buddy to do? I like the idea plus it "could" add replay value if a buddy or two gets killed along the way.

yeh this is nice touch, they also said that the game storyline is continously evolving according to your actions in the game - whatever that means

so apparently if these people stay alive, some of them somehow fit into the story - but if they die, then the story works around them rather than just breaking

sounds good on paper.. im interested in seeing how this one plays out

Uh, how is this innovative? RPGs have been doing this for years. They only stopped doing it recently in the transition to newb-friendly consoles.

Sounds awesome. I remember when you couldn't see later levels in a game until you actually had the skills to get to them. It's nice to see a game that gives respect to a player's skill and doesn't baby them around. I'm sure eventually someone will make a mod that makes NPCs invincible if just you want to be lazy and see everything.

It's not so much laziness. If some dumbass NPC gets has ass popped while he's across the gameworld, I don't wanna be punished for it. Either way, I expect this game to be pretty good, and I'm looking forward to it. This may play out better than it sounds right now. We'll see.

Oh I'm sure it'll be worse than that. Remember how everyone in Far Cry could hit you from about 3 miles away with a pistol while you had zero LOS due to foliage or whatnot?

I imagine it will be something like this:

*Player Dude* "Come on Buddy! I need you to cross this ten foot across ravine so that you can unlock the next 2 hours of side quests and gaming goodness!"

*Buddy starts to cross*

*Enemy AI happens to have telescopic sight and the instant that the buddy has even one pixel "visible" the Enemy AI drops him. From three miles away. With a pistol. And then kills the PC with three perfectly placed shots.*

*Player* ".... ... ... ... I paid how much for this shit?"

To add to the immersive factor, when your character dies the game starts to format your hard drive.

...this game is one big degradation fest.

1. weapons degrade.
2. vehicles degrade.
3. content degrades.

I'm wondering if it alerts you that a buddy has died, including the ones you haven't met yet. Hopefully some of this stuff can be disabled in the config files.

No, it usually overheats your CPU and GPU. A formatted hard drive wouldn't give you the correct idea of death
