IANA chemist, but I am a print major, did a big research paper on this.
I am a chemist.
Paper and plastic both have there strong points and weak points from a chemical usage standpoint.
The biggest thing about plastics are that they are made from fossil fuels, which we have a limited amount of. I find it silly to make things like grocery bags which people use for 3 minutes out of a limited resource when trees grow without any help from humans.
Though I am working on project to solve all the mentioned negative issues with plastics, and if it works I am going to be filthy rich and I will use the money to buy Crytek and tell that jackass Cevat to STFU.
And, FYI, in the US we now have more forest land then we did at the start of the 1900's. Businessmen are not stupid, they learned a long time ago that the trees grow back faster if you leave the ecosystem intact. Clear cutting only takes place for land-development.
