Censored Fallout 3 Down Under?

GamerChip reports that retailers have told them a modified version of Fallout 3 has been cleared for sale in Australia (thanks MCV), after depictions of drug use caused the Australian OFLC to refuse the sale of the uncut version down under (story). They don't seem convinced enough to take this out of the rumor category, but apparently more than one shop has told them they are now taking preorders for a version of the game that has had all references to drug use stripped out.

Obama and Bush wiretapping censored austrailians has everything to do with the lack of a games ratings system and i'll tell you why:

mar-fucking-supials

freedom of thought is being held hostage in those pouches of theirs. it's why johnny can't dissent, he's afraid of suffocating.

can't we americans just start an 'adopt-an-austrailian' organization where we purchase uncensored games and ship them to our oppressed brethren? i dont have a name but i do have a slogan, 'fuck you, kangaroo!'

WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 2007 — President Bush signed into law on Sunday legislation that broadly expanded the government’s authority to eavesdrop on the international telephone calls and e-mail messages of American citizens without warrants.

A bill that Obama voted for btw...

Your blessed Bush Republican is way a head of you, dude.

1) The guy said he liked Obama, he probably isn't a Bush supporter.

2) Eavesdropping on international telephone calls has exactly WHAT to do with censorship?

Seriously. If you're going to complain about Bush, there are plenty of things to complain about already without trying to infer something where it doesn't exist.

...unfortunately as the previous poster said, this may well be what we'll be faced with in the US very soon. as much as I like Obama, having a majority democratic administration means we might start seeing innocuous things being labeled "hate speech" or beating up hookers in GTA being nailed as "encouraging violence against women".

Yes sinew. I have. I can't watch it anymore. Living and working in Canberra, I prefer to call it "The Asylum for the Cynically Insane" .... but is it any different from working in Washington DC, The Hague or any other capital city that simply exists to be the seat of Government.

On the subject of why Fallout 3 is banded from sale, it stems back to politicians perceptions that games are for kids and therefore the lack of an R18+ (or AO) rating in Australia. If we had an R18+ rating then it wouldn't be an issue. It would be rated. It would be restricted for sale to adults. Life would go on. It wouldn't even be worthy of a news story ... because unlike the US, if something is rated R18+ it would still sold by major retail chains. So ... all we need now is for the SA Attorney General to ratify the decision to have an R18+ rating ( ... and God help us all, he's Australia's answer to Jack Thompson).

has anyone seen the television series "the hollowmen?" it follows an austrailian government think tank in a style similar to that of the show "the office". 4 episodes have aired. i find it very entertaining and hope theres an upcoming episode about gaming censorship.

(its available on mininova... wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Fellas, if the Australian government did a better job down here, I wouldn't feel the need to do drugs so bad!

If I were atall interested in Fallout 3, which unfortunately I'm not, I'd import anyway.

What makes this more ridiculous is that, assuming it's anything like the first two games, all the drugs are fictional. Perhaps Bethesda should just add some backstory explaining that Stim-packs, Buffout, Mentats and RadAway were all approved by the FDA for over the counter sale before the nuclear holocost.

To get an idea of just how parochial the Aussie govt is go back about a week to the video link Stephen posted of a Aussie TV show in which citizens can ask questions of a panel of govt officials. Its simply mind bending how they don't feel they are censoring free speech. unfortunately as the previous poster said, this may well be what we'll be faced with in the US very soon. as much as I like Obama, having a majority democratic administration means we might start seeing innocuous things being labeled "hate speech" or beating up hookers in GTA being nailed as "encouraging violence against women".

If you want to understand why Australia has completely senseless censorship rules then this video should help:

http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/07/25/clueless-aussie-politicians-r-ratings-game-violence-fallout-3-rape-games

The sheer idiocy and "i don't like it, so you can't have it" approach displayed in this video is quite shocking. In the end it's not about censorship, it's about the right to choose as an adult.

For all the talk of American censorship in the past, it seems other countries are even worse offenders. Censorship sucks no matter where you are.

Here is hoping this single move results in the end of all drug use in Australia setting an example for the rest of the world to aspire too. I know I'm looking to get clean now in antisapation of being like my heroes in this game (and the Olympics)
