World of Warcraft Achievements Coming

The World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Website announces that achievements will be added to World of Warcraft with the release of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Here's a bit:
World of Warcraft’s achievements come in several varieties. Some simply require specific actions to unlock, such as getting a haircut or defeating a member of each race in your opposing faction in PvP. Others involve a progress bar and require you to do something several times -- such as give out 10 hugs. Some achievements are progressive; for example, once you complete an achievement to collect 10 vanity pets, you might next be asked to collect 25. Finally, meta achievements unlock when you complete other achievements -- unlocking all World Exploration achievements (see below) unlocks a World Explorer meta achievement. Some achievements, including those that involve quests, honorable kills, items currently in your possession, skills (including professions), exploration, and reputations, will be applied to your character retroactively.

You kind of not getting the MMO gameplay mate. If you like ET:QW great, play it. I liked it too.

MMO games need achivements (they already got similar one, called faction reputation in WOW though achievements are more simplistic breakdowns with some additions). Otherwise the grinding would be really just that... Mindless and goalless grinding.

Similar system as Vanity in WOW exists since the beginning mate. Called "rested XP". EQII kind of stolen it from WOW. But its surely important for all the MMO games so why not.

I'm looking forward for Achievement system

Yeah, I'm sorry, but I just do NOT get the point of achievements (it's an articial supplantation of normal gameplay.)

I have to agree with you. My first experience with 'achievements' was with Half Life 2 Ep2 a couple of weeks ago. (No, I don't play consoles, yes I'm behind the times on PC games).

When starting the game I think I saw a list off all the achievements I could possibly get but none of them made any sense to me as I hadn't played the game yet.

After completion (and during play), many of them didn't make sense as in order to progress through the game you'd have to accomplish them anyways.

Others, such as racing Dog down the river, when I was challenged with that, I thought to myself, “I bet that's on the achievement list”. Sure enough, it was. I lost the race and didn't care.

I think I finished the game with just over fifty percent of achievements, but I suspect that if you complete the game you get that by default.

As to TF2 (I installed it finally and played a couple of maps), I think they are completely bizarre and useless, like weapon unlocks.

I much prefer either of the Enemy Territory style types of gameplay where the game and stats last for a limited map rotation and then is completely reset.

It prevents useless stat padding and depends on skill. You can briefly get your name in lights and a small gameplay advantage and then it's all reset. I can play a round and look at my hit accuracy or death/kill ratio and brag (or cringe) but when it comes down to any of these games you know that you killed a few subs and got zero points, or helped revive lot's of people or killed a bunch of aircraft or whatever.

If you're halfway good at an online game, you already know if you played like crap or were an elite killing machine or not. Maybe the scoreboard didn't reflect it, but you understand and realize the fun you had and how particularly useless or heroic you were.

Putting in endless stats, unlocks and 'achievements' encourages shallow players to abandon the game and team and focus purely on personal statistics that are ultimately pointless to anyone except their own egos. It detracts from the team spirit of the game and puts the focus on the individuals sense of importance with numbers that are basically worthless to the game, their fellow players and themselves.

That's why I completely agree with your statement that "it's an artificial supplantation of normal gameplay."

A personal medal case or trophy rack for the faction relevant achievements would be cool, something you could show somehow on your character as well perhaps. Want to impress? Do a /flex and show your new friend your "I slaughtered 900 eels for the Horde" medal.

Eh, if you are going to do this it needs to be for more than vanity, ala achievement xp in EQII.

I was just picking on you really, it was kind of a big softball just lobbed up there

You're right, and there's a reason they're getting subscribers like that even at this stage of the game. Achievements are a good idea in an MMO, and I doubt there's many people playing the game that won't enjoy having them there. I burned out and quit a while back, and I'd consider coming back to check this out.

That'd sound a lot more impressive if Warhammer was actually available for people to buy.

Fair enough, I get the RTS Warhammer mixed up with the MMO. Still, take just about every MMO and add em up, and it'll still be less than WoW according to mmogchart.com: http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart7.html

Keep trying what exactly? Printing money? They're already bigger than Warhammer and LotRO combined, so acting like Blizzard is behind in any sort of measurement that counts sounds rather uninformed.

Hmm, as much as I hate achievements and as much as I play World of Warcraft, I think this is actually the most sensible use of achievements yet. An MMO is a perfect place for goals that require relentless pursuit of some vague statistic, because often people will do that anyway to maximise their character or to acquire everything of a certain time (gotta catch 'em all mentality).

I personally don't 'grind' unless I have to, and i've put in the effort to have a character that could accomplish most of the proposed achievements quite easily, but for someone who hasn't then it's quite a viable thing to aim for in an MMO.

But I agree with Ray in general, fuck achievements. Right in the pooper.

I remember a while back that blizzard said they wanted to keep the amount of titles rare.

I've encountered many on my server with "So-and-so of the Shattered Sun". Titles basically let you differentiate yourself from others.

I wish they would bring out some kind of Alternate Advancement skills, ala EQ1 so that players can still feel as if they are advancing when they hit the lvl cap, instead of just grinding for gear or cash.

Most other MMO's call these Badges.

Now, can these achievements be shown as titles ?

It doesn't supplant gameplay, it just gives you a little more reason to enjoy things you'd be doing anyway. They're fun, it's one of the best things LOTR brought to the table and I'm glad other games are picking up on it. Warhammer has this as well.

I's only a grind if you're not having fun.

They worked well in lotro. I never bothered grinding them unless I was very close. They just popped up as I was playing. Adds another way to differentiate yourself from others.
