OK, the use of 'Id Tech' threw me off. Id Tech '4' is basically the Doom Engine. The same that is in Quake wars.

It's Id Tech 5 engine that we are all curious about.

I havn't read ANYWHERE a word saying this game was using Id Tech 4. My latest Game Informer mag doesn't say squat about this.

I still don't know why they didn't do a very stylistic Heretic/Hexen with the D3 engine. It's been a lloonnggg time and that would really lend itself to a dark, barely lit medieval world.

They could have pushed unrealism easir due to the fantasy element, too.

I too am not entirely thrilled that this will be using Tech4. Hoping it will be good.

is it? goddamnit.

also for the record, i loved quake4 but i suspect that is probably because of my love for the strogg storyline/lore rather than the actual gameplay.

Even so, it seems like a bad idea to prioritise a feature like a massive map over visuals, especially for a game like Wolfenstein that simply doesn't need it. If we were talking about a game like STALKER then it would be different. Even so, Oblivion had great graphics despite the main map being one large area (very minimal loading all things considered).

As long as you're (un)loading sections on the fly, you shouldn't have to sacrifice large maps or visuals. Picmipping/LoD'ing models should work if you have to see the whole place at once.

No reason the D3 engine shouldn't be able to handle it, especially after all of Raven's modifications to it, but people are still stuck with this false premonition that D3 can't do open areas. If anything, it's MORE capable since D3 maps aren't BSP based, and don't need visportaling (but don't quote me on that one)

Raven used to be best pals with id. heretic was the first game to use the Doom engine, and probably the beginning of the whole fps game-engines as a middleware product popularity. That got a lot of play over the network, Gameconn and DWANGO. Hexen was even better.

Heretic was probably the first notable example because it was artistically and stylistically distinct from Doom, and because it was actually a fun, well-made game. Capstone Software made a few Wolfenstein-engine games waaaay back in the day - Operation: Body Count was a terrible counterterrorism game, but Corridor 7 isn't as bad as some people made it out to be, and it had multiplayer! :{D - but Raven showed the way to respectability for licensed engines. They arguably did that earlier with CyClones, which was also a licensed id engine that Carmack & Co. didn't actually make a game out of... and id's very first publisher, Softdisk, licensed / extorted a license to their old Catacombs 3D engine in the early '90s, which they made into a number of really forgettable games...

Memory lane, alright. Felt myself slipping way back there for a second.

I'm not exactly tantalized by the new Wolfenstein footage, but here's hoping there's more to this offering than we're being shown so far.

Assassin's Creed did it brilliantly. Not only that but I imagine it's still going to be divided into levels, it's just that all the levels will join together to produce the "city".

Some early "leaks" mentioned that the whole single player would take place across one level, the giant city. I also recall statements mentioning no load times.

Plus they're rendering an entire city, so we shouldn't be expecting Crysis-quality visuals.

Raven improved with Quake IV and it turned out better than I expected.
Quake IV was enjoyable and was better than I was expecting, but at the end of the day it was only a slightly above-average game.

Raven improved with Quake IV and it turned out better than I expected. The trend may well continue. I guess we'll see when this comes out.

I see complaints about lack of innovation but in previous posts about all the new things that they are adding or changing, people complained about each of those as well.

I'm willing to give them a chance on this one.

One thing that I hope they won't do is try to pack in so many extra visual effects that they are afraid to put more than one or two baddies on the screen at the same time for fear that the rendering engine will slow down to only a few fps. Gameplay is far more important than cramming in every last doodad. This has happened to too many games in the industry.

While Heretic and Hexen were fun they're not exactly that distinctive, plus they were never as popular as Doom or Wolfenstein. That doesn't mean a remake of either wouldn't be fun but it would be like playing a completely new game.

NEway, this trailer is unimpressive. Everything is an action shot and doesn't give you time to take anything in, which helps them cover up the rather disappointing graphics and supernatural angle they're taking. I enjoyed RTCW but this doesn't interest me... they should have waited and used id Tech5.

I liked Wolf enough and it's been long enough that I'm not upset that they're going back to it. I will agree we could use an updated Heretic or Hexen.

As for co-op play, I wouldn't hold my breath. What was the last PC FPS with co-op play in the actual game (not specialized maps made just for co-op)? I don't count team MP games like UT or ET or BF or so-called "tac shooters" like GR or R6 (I say that in quotes because the Clancy tac shooters of today are nothing like the ones from years ago).

The last one I actually played with coop was Doom 3 with the LMS mod, but that's a mod. I mean out-of-the-box.

why wolfenstien?

there hasn't been a single heretic or hexen game for years! sure dark messiah was pretty sweet, but it was no co-op hexen

"but there are never any moments you tell people about later on or things you want to screenshot to show other people."

The sequence from Quake IV where you're strapped to that conveyor belt and can see yourself getting disected was pretty memorable.

Other than that, I agree though: Raven games are technically solid and well-made, but are mostly bland to play.

I dunno. I'm not terribly impressed. I'll probably keep an eye on it though.

Er... what was I saying again? Memory lane I suppose.

Anyways, the fact that they're developing it gives me a bit more hope. Of course, Quake 4 didn't do it for me at all.

We'll see.
