New Wolfenstein Details

There's a blurb about the new Wolfenstein game on Tiscali Games with a few details on the new version of the World War II shooter from Game Informer magazine. The only real surprise is that B.J. is getting supernatural powers of his own this time around. The blurb also describes the environment as "one large city, which will open itself up as you progress through given missions and quests" and that there will be "randomly generated content" occasionally blocking your way.

I think he was referring to RtCW.

Yes, I see that now after looking up Spear of Destiny. Man did I love that game.

But come to think of it, Doom was awesome if you had a couple of either 386/486's (can't remember, probably both) on an internal network and played it together. It was the dawn of networked gaming, we had 1200 baud modems back then and I don't think the web existed except for usenet. I was lucky enough to be at that fore-front and have the hardware.

I can actually picture in my mind hunting down my brother in dark flashing hallways.

We've come a long way. And ET still gives me a rush of adrenaline.

Anyways, I've finally finished the download for TF2, let's see what THATs all about...

Those screenshots are pretty generic looking. I'm also not big on the whole "one city" part. A WW2 shooter needs some variety in scenery and I'm thinking the bombed out city will get pretty tedious after a while.

I thought the first Wolf was released over a decade ago, before Doom and didn't have any multiplayer. At least I don't think it did unless it had IPX or something, but I don't remember it.

I think he was referring to RtCW.

The single player RtCW was fun enough, I enjoyed it, but the multiplayer done by Nerve was awesome. I don't know how many times I played that beach demo (speaking of 12 hours of demos).

Then Splash Damage took it and made Enemy Territory and now Quake Wars.

I remember playing Spear of Destiny after Wolf3D. At the time I thought it was incredibly creepy and gory although I doubt I'd think much of it now.

Anyways, I've enjoyed the entire spread of Wolf games over the years. I hope this new installment is entertaining although you never know anymore as everything seems to be so dumbed down to the point of annoyance these days.

One large city is kind of a turn off.
It all lies in the implementation - GTA4 didn't suffer because of it.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a decent enough game, but it really didn't have the flavor of the original Wolf3D.
Yeah, but I'm not sure the gameplay of the original would have held up against modern games. I personally enjoyed it, even if it wasn't anything revolutionary.

I'll wait and see how the game pans out. Supernatural powers aren't a turn off to me, though obviously if they're thrown in as a gimmick - like the suit in Crysis - then that's shit. They were very well implemented in Bioshock and there's we've seen nothing to suggest the same couldn't be true of this. I'm perfectly happy to bitch and moan when there's a reason to but the fuss here simply doesn't make sense to me. I only say this because when they announced COD5 was going back to WWII I, like many others thought it was a terrible idea - however, looking at the trailer it looks like they're done something original with it.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a decent enough game, but it really didn't have the flavor of the original Wolf3D. They need to make it a simple, fun shooter with hordes of relatively stupid enemies.

I could actually deal with the one large city (though it really should be one large castle, so long as they fill it up with a tremendous amount of enemies and make it a pure action game from beginning to end. No sneaking, no dark hallways with monsters jumping out and saying boo! Just tons of enemies for you to mow down with a machine gun and a lot of unnecessary gore.

I'm not to keen on the magic bit either. It could potentially be okay, but I doubt it. The supernatural elements of Wolf3D took the form of three armed zombies and robotic bosses, not so much supernatural powers like you'd see in Bioshock. The supernatural bit is sort wrong for BJ. BJ is supposed to be a red blooded American, normal every-day-Joe, Nazi killing machine.

One large city is kind of a turn off. But I'm one of the few that actually liked the RTCW Single player aspects.

Giving B.J. supernatural powers is also kind of a turn off... the character is supposed to be a Rambo, not a "god".

Well, we'll see how it pans out, but both of those ideas are rather stupid. The randomly generated content might be a re-play plus, if it's done right.

The original Wolf single player was not amazing to begin with, but the Multplayer game was damn good. And the game came out in x-mas of 01 btw. I remember playing the multiplayer demo in my dorm room, and people we're always drawn in by the cool sounds. I had a lot of requests for the wolf beta before long. I even got my dorm mate interested in it, and he never played video games. I wonder if they can still recapture and build on the fun of the old wolf after 7-8 years later.

the "supernatural powers" in BioShock worked well

Because there was a plausible (in terms of the storyline) reason to have them.

This just sounds like "We've had him kill Nazi's, Nazi Super Soldiers, Nazi undead, abominations, robo-Hitler and we don't have any ideas left on how to make it cool so we'll let him fart lightning bolts and destroys panzers with the power of his mind".

And yeah, I'm kinda throwing the baby out with the bathwater before we've even seen the game. But the point that he was just a regular joe who overcame adversity just on the far side of ridiculous was the selling point.

Let him pick up new fangled german superweapons, sure, but you don't need occultic powers to kick robo-Nazi-hellfiends asses imo... =)

the info isnt exactly promising but I'll hold off condemning it to damnation for now. It is possible that they've actually done something fun with powers, the "supernatural powers" in BioShock worked well. RTCW was a bit silly on the SP anyway and, well, it was okish.

I'll admit it is probable they will screw with the multiplayer, but it'd be a bit hasty to line them up against the wall just yet.

It played on the same backdrop as the first and third Indiana Jones films.

maybe they need to go and watch those films and get some ideas instead of watching spiderman or whatever. fuck you whoever is making this new wolf.

Wolfenstein was always fun because it was you (the regular joe) against the Nazi Occultists... It played on the same backdrop as the first and third Indiana Jones films.

Giving Blazcowicz super-powers just levels the playing field and makes it shit.

This sounds like complete crap. What kind of idiotic designer wants to use sandbox gameplay for Wolfenstein?

Unfortunately, Raven is beyond dead. And if they really wanted to make some money, they'd have had the common sense (and design mental capacity) to have made another Soldier of Fortune game.

People were all over the idea of a new one, only to be disappointed by the abysmal failure that is SoF: Payback. They couldn't even make the shotgun fun.

That game was so bad I got rid of a copy I got for free.

Because Wolfenstein has always been a game grounded in realism.
It wasn't until that post that I recalled the robot-Hitler boss from Wolf3D. Yup, realism was never one of the game's key characteristics.
