Warhammer Online Guild Beta Begins

EA Mythic announces the launch of the Guild Beta for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, paving the way for the launch of the MMORPG in the fall:
FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts studio (NASDAQ:ERTS), today announced that the Guild Beta for Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ (WAR) has begun. Over 10,000 guilds applied and those selected will have the chance to experience the game’s most expansive beta phase yet.

An historic 750,000 applicants have signed up for the opportunity to enter WAR’s closed beta, and the selected guilds will join tens of thousands of new participants as the game enters the final phase of its closed beta test. Guild members, many with long histories playing a multitude of massively multiplayer online games, will test WAR’s recently added Guild and Heraldry features, as well as Public Quests™, new dungeons, Scenarios, user interface updates and more as the MMORPG advances towards its launch later this year.

“WAR’s Guild Beta is here and some of the world’s most experienced MMO players will now get a chance to play one of the most anticipated MMOs of all time,” said Mark Jacobs, vice president and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. “We look forward to seeing them beat, bash and burn their way through the world that we have created for their enjoyment. It’s going to be a lot of fun and it’s going to be glorious!”

Based on Games Workshop’s epic and longstanding tabletop fantasy war game, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning features revolutionary Realm vs. Realm™ (RvR) gameplay that immerses players in a world of perpetual conflict. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is scheduled for launch on the PC in the fall of 2008.

How many years have they been releasing monthly hype letters? And the weird brit guy doing his little shows talking about how great the game is? I watched and read maybe 3 of each of those, then they announced the game was being put back into pre-beta/alpha/whatever they called it. Which right then told me these people will happily tell you whatever will get you to buy the game. The only redeeming thing going on here is that they announce stuff is being removed..........however us non-beta testers have no way of knowing how big of an impact that may have on the game.

Again as with every other MMO out there, people will buy it and say "Well the endgame is where the game begins, just like X, Y, Z." Then you'll get there and see that what was left out might have been most important at the end.

I just don't see why companies just make a solid little environment where everything is there for the fundamentals of a game.....then project when they expect the rest of the features in. That way I can say....well I really wanted a flying mount, so ...6 months from launch. While the people who want to jump in first thing can get in.

All we get anymore is severely broken games on release that have a tab/command/button indicating they expected the feature to work......yet most of the "cool" features setting them apart don't work.

This stupid process of literally promising the world and delivering a continent is why the following list doesn't get my money period. And why others have to offer a trial period, aside from Blizz as their stuff you can pretty much expect it to just work 90% of the time.

-Anything with McQuaid's name attached, I really hope Vanguard ended his MMO career to show that blatant lieing is not the way to go.

- SOE...Everquest expansions became crazy..a new one every half year. If you took a break for any period of time you'd be so far behind it was daunting.

And EQ2 (to me) not being anything remotely like EQ...and broken to boot.

Also had a hand in Vanguard....

Planetside (which I liked but they just ....dropped it basically).

SWG (some liked it, some didn't)....I personally got tired of them changing my profession so every time I logged in I was noticeably weaker and got tired of finding something I liked....didn't even make it past the first month. Lots of potential with the world construction and what not, but they just couldn't leave things alone long enough to enjoy yourself. Then come to find out no one could become a Jedi for like half a year after release...Star Wars without Jedi or spaceships.

Any chance they are doing this to get the game out before WoW's expansion?

Epic fail.

All the little newfag kiddies who never played a mmo before wow will be jumping ship the second they hear this, which means VERY GOOD things for the gaming community now. Only more devoted and actual fans of the game will be staying with this game upon release. Itll be fucking fantastic to not have all newfags and wowfags running around,

And for me, please do stay in WOTLK / AoC.

Would be impossible to got back to auto combat after Age of Conan.

QFT

As much as AoC is lacking content, has bugs galore, all kinds of balance issues. The combat is so much fun that I and many others have stuck with the game more because going back to WoW or some other auto-combat game just is out of the question. AoC will improve and it's PvP is already a freaking BLAST (though balance issues can get annoying.) It'll improve and balance over time. But I just couldn't go to another MMOG if it's gonna use the same tired auto-combat of most standard MMOGs.

Hell even CoX's combat (previously amongst the best in the industry,) is boring as hell to me now.

Yeah. They've cut out some of the stuff from the game, though. 4 classes, 4 capital cities. Now there's only going to be two capital cities, one for each side.

EDIT : And someone already said all this.

It seems the game is being forced out the door by the publisher when it's not nearly finished. I wonder when publishers will learn not to screw over their own games by doing that.

Mythic specifically states that this was not the decision of their publisher.

Sorry, yeah I was just reading that link. That is disappointing. It seems the game is being forced out the door by the publisher when it's not nearly finished. I wonder when publishers will learn not to screw over their own games by doing that.

Another thing I'm dissapointed by is that it seems the "open" beta will begin just weeks before the game launches. I feel like an idiot for buying into mythic's "pay for beta" schemes, such as buying lots of comic books, and buying the $80 collector's edition. I'm still not in the beta after all that.

Why do you think they're cutting da choppa?

/. says stuff got removed...as I don't play it, I can't verify that, but here ya go...

http://games.slashdot.org/games/08/07/11/167250.shtml

edit:
In the latest of an ongoing series of interviews with MMORPG.com, Mythic Entertainment VP and General Manager Mark Jacobs has dropped big news on the Warhammer Online fanbase: major features are being culled from the game in order to make their Fall launch deadline. In short, the capital cities for the Dark Elf, High Elf, Orc, and Dwarf factions will not be in the game at launch. The Human city of Altdorf and the Chaos Inevitable City will be the only Capital cities in the game. This is an enormous change, seemingly changing much of what we know about the game's core of RvR gameplay.

Additionally, four classes are being removed, deemed to be in a condition unsuitable for launch. They are:

* The Choppa (Greenskin)
* The Hammerer (Dwarf)
* The Blackguard (Dark Elf)
* The Knight of the Blazing Sun (Empire)

Why do you think they're cutting da choppa? The plan has always been to have exactly 4 unique classes for each of the 6 playable races. They wouldn't just cut out a class unless they were replacing it with something else.

that's way too much for a niche game that'll be lucky to break Camelot's subscription figures

What's so niche about MMO's these days?

This is EA we're talking about... can they release anything that isn't sports-related on time without fucking it up? And to be honest, I'd love to see some names and figures on this 750K of applicants they supposedly received, because that's way too much for a niche game that'll be lucky to break Camelot's subscription figures because of all the negative stigma attached to it. As for this "revolutionary RvR combat", ummm, didn't Camelot already have it in place? Morons... finally, reducing six to two and cutting four? Sounds like EA's already inflicting the NGE on it...

Holy Shit...
they are cutting the Choppa class? Tons of fanboys have to be crying right now.
From the two 'as official as a fansite gets' forums that i visited over the last year or so.. there were a TON of players that wanted to be a Choppa.
Including creating enormous resource sites covering the Choppa...lots of class talk, people basically bought into being that class.
wow..
some people have got to be pissed.

All these reductions make me leery of the game now.

i guess there's still WoTLK eh?

No need to worry Fion. They aren't releasing the game finished. I'm surprised this isn't up on Blue's main page yet actually.

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?FEATURE=2041&GAME=239&PAGE=1&bhcp=1

The gist -

Reducing 6 capital cities to just 2
Removing 4 classes from the game
No ETA on when (or if) this content will be patched in after release.

I think more importantly the info that isnt being put up in the news : » WAR will feature Punkbuster, cuts four classes and capitals for release

that is from the front page of my WAR news site. They removed all but 1 per side for capital cities. Saying they will add it later after release.

Im guessing they still plan to charge full game price too, which is some bullshit..but I dont think im going to cancel my CE edition preorder.

Yea I'm in too and you'd have to get in to find out really. I will say however that it's not remotely the dream godsend that many are hoping for, just another slow-paced auto-combat MMOG that IMHO isn't gonna make a fall release.. at least not if they plan on releasing the game 'finished.'
