Wolfenstein: ET Map Source Files

Splash Damage now offers downloads of the map source files from Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, the teamplay World War II shooter. This is said to be a "belated present to mark Wolf:ET's fifth birthday," and since the files were posted on Friday, our story is belated as well. The release includes source .map files for all six of the officially released maps for a mere 6 MB download. Word is that these maps can also be used in Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars: "On a side note, for those of you wanting to import the maps into Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars, jRAD and Torchy assure me that this is indeed possible as EditWorld will happily import *.map files. Keep in mind that it will require some of the obvious texture path replacements and entity work, though."

It's still extremely popular but games based on the Q3 engine just do not age well at all

Really? I think they age excellently. Remember Quake 3 was released in '99. There were no significant updates to the renderer between Q3 and ET either. If you crank up the detail it still looks pretty good; sure, it might not compare to a modern day FPS but it's still impressive.

Gameplay wise ET is still the most fun I've ever had in a pub server type environment. The default maps are so well designed for good solid play.

Is there some holdup with the next Wolfenstein ?

According to some job posting I saw a few days back, Threewave (after Nerve were taken off the task of RTCW2 MP development) said they recently finished up work on the multiplayer maps or something like that. Can't find where, though.

I'd be extremely shocked if the Battlefield & CoD4 kiddies didn't trash RTCW2 because it doesn't include vehicles, or it's not realistic!!!!111 and all that stupid crap.

I only tried the demo for Quake ET. It didn't have the same feel as Wolf ET at all. Yeah, QW ET seemed a little dumbed down. All the cheesy voices and distracting floating visuals didn't help either. Did some of the other maps have more of the old feel ? I like mission based, strategy oriented multiplayer much more than run-and-gun multiplayer. The high price also helped prevent me from taking a chance on it.

I loved Wolf ET. Is there some holdup with the next Wolfenstein ? I thought that it was supposed to be out a long time ago. I hope that this time they have an option to let one side play the zombies or some other baddies.

W:ET was incredible the first couple of years. It's still extremely popular but games based on the Q3 engine just do not age well at all. I was surprised to learn that it's only five years old.

I replayed RTCW a couple of years ago and it was still just as fun as the first time. I long ago gave up on the MP side because of the rampant cheating/hacks, although it was great fun the first year of its release, but the SP stuff keeps me coming back every couple of years.
Odd how RTCW2 was announced so long ago and has now disappeared from the radar, with the later-announced Rage and Doom 4 taking the stage.

ET:QW would've had me as a fan if the gameplay would've matched the features. As it stood for me, all the deployables weren't needed to defend or attack and sometimes, not very useful because of the pace of the game.
Items went up, stood out like a sore thumb.. and right back down. It was bunny-hopping, super speed shooting with deployables and vehicles thrown in. Not a true collaboration of all those variables. The speed didn't match up. Lots of people complained about that, and ultimately.. was a huge reason people didn't get involved with that game-or stay involved.

ET was amazing and i put it up there with Q1CTF (3Wave/TWCTF) and Tribes as perfect shooters.

Enemy Territory was a blast, one of the best multiplayer games out there and it was free, then again maybe I just liked dropping motor rounds on peoples heads

Tried QW but I like the original better... anyone else?

Yes and no. I'll play both, W:ET because of the pace and just guns, ETQW because of the more stuff to play with. Depends on my mood, which as of recently hasn't really been any game heh.

I'm with you on that Hump! C'mon Raven! Show us some screenies for Pete's sake! Everyone raves about MoH this and CoD that, but to me RtCW was the best. Sure, it wasn't based on actual conflicts, but it was damn good fun.

I wonder when Raven is going to start showing some screens of the new Wolfenstein project.
