Crytek: PC Sales to Piracy Ratio 1:15 or 1:20

There's a Cevat Yerli Q&A on IGN talking with the Crytek CEO about a variety of topics. One interesting bit, as pointed out by Gamasutra (thanks Mike Martinez), is his elaboration on his previous assertions about the impact of PC piracy on sales of Crysis, as his guestimates at piracy rations are pretty darned steep:
The other critique outside Crytek was the fact that the PC industry is really, at the moment, I would say the most intensely pirated market ever. It's crazy how the ratio between sales to piracy is probably 1 to 15 to 1 to 20 right now. For one sale there are 15 to 20 pirates and pirate versions, and that's a big shame for the PC industry. I hope with Warhead I hope we improve the situation, but at the same time it may have an impact on [our] PC exclusivity in the future.

i loved 'far Cry' and played thru that game several times but Cevat needs to stop complaining in the media. Crysis was at a 'B' score game and that is being kind.

When has Cevat actually said a single fucking word of THANKS to the 1.5 million people who bought his game? Oh, that's right, he never did. He was too busy whining about piracy.

Some of you lot frankly don't deserve opinions.

Isn't the Chinese government supposed to be blocking guys like you? Seriously. Back to www.YaoMingRules.chi with you!

What can you possibly bring to the table?

Oh, I dunno. The fact that I bought both his games, maybe? And expected a FINISHED game in Crysis? And am now being told that because all we PC game players are such pirates, they probably will never finish the story? Over some retarded-pulled-out-of-his-ass 1:20 ratio?

The reason his game didn't sell is because very very few people had the hardware to run it. The end. But more and more, publishers keep blaming PIRACY when their game doesn't sell, when in fact it's because they made a piece of shit game.

But hey, keep defending that. Chairman Mao loves you!

"t's not like they go out of their way to share their woes at every turn."

No, you're right, Cevat is practically HIDING in his office, yelling at his secretary that he's not taking any more calls.

I'm surprised I haven't gotten an automated calling system calling me at home yet. "Hi, this is Cevat Yerli. Can I talk to you about piracy for a minute?"

"If anything, you should actually thank Crytek for being so adamant in actually avoiding anything that might hinder the legitimate buyers that when they released Crysis they didn't use any extensive copy protection like, say, Bioshock. "

Hey buddy, which country do you live in where the customer should be thankful to the producer? Here in the west, we kind of feel it should be the other way around. Also, Cevat has already stated, in his PCGamer interview, that they're going to go to online authentication after Warhead. (They're with EA and all).

So prepare for the rape robots.

When has Cevat actually said a single fucking word of THANKS to the 1.5 million people who bought his game? Oh, that's right, he never did. He was too busy whining about piracy.

"made a torrent count some time ago, just a rough estimation of the number of downloads for a single title, CoD4 and came away with a rather significant number almost as big as the actual number of copies sold at the time"

Who cares? If you sold 6 million copies, who the fuck cares? Also, that's a 1:1 ratio then. Cevat is rambling about a 1:20 ratio. Kind of a difference there, huh?

And quit using Stardock as an example.

Oh, right, because they go AGAINST what you feel to be true. Facts are always so irritating.

they also had a very small development budget.

And they made a fan-fucking-tastic game with it. So what does that say about your precious big budget games?

Let's see. Small budget games I've played recently :

Sins of a Solar Empire (awesome)
Galciv2 (awesome)
Lego Star Wars (awesome+)

Big budget games that I've played or seen recently.

Halo847,345. (Sucks.)
Gears of War (sucks.)
Crysis (Good game. Farcry was better.)
Battle for Middle Earth trilogy (none will run on my machine because of EA's copy protection bullshit)

So yeah, we really need to keep going big budget!

to prove the point that Stardock is a successful niche developer?

Stardock is actually one of the biggest developers that exist for the PC in non-game areas. But okay, in game areas. Let's see. They developed Galciv2, which could be considered niche, I guess. A million copies is niche? Okay.

Sins of a solar empire is niche? It ranked number 1 on most sales charts when it came out. It's still ranked in the top ten. Do you have a different definition of niche in Ugandistan, where you live?

Also, they're going to be publishing DemiGod. Which looks to be a big BIG title. Presumably they'll also publish the next Supreme Commander.

Yeah, they're pretty niche alright. Derek Smart wishes he was that niche.

And the longer i wait, the more i suspect that they do NOT wish to examine this "en detail", because they know, that unofficial copies are nothing than a minor annoyance and nothing more.

If they knew that, and it was true, then why do they make a song and dance out of it, making all this ill will? Or is it that since THEY are the ones who do feel the effect of illeagel copying, they just may be in a better postion to make an educated statement about it (without these 'facts' you wish to be showen; because you cant show any more 'facts' to prove thing your way either)

No, no game deserves to be pirated. If it sucks, why the hell would you want to play it anyway? If it's good enough to play through, it's good enough to buy. If you don't like that a company won't release a demo, then don't buy their shit. Stealing is fucking stealing, and unlike food, you don't need games to survive so there is no justification for it. Period. Stop trying to rationalize it.

I wish Cevat Yerli would just shut the fuck up and go make console exclusives already, I for sure would not miss them. Farcy was crap (got fooled in to buying that one), tried the Crysis demo and I knew from the start it was the exact same tech demo shit. I don't pirate games as I can afford to buy what I want, I actually buy a lot of games but Crysis was not one of them.

With 1.5 million copy's sold and a stunning 300 people playing online, that should tell dear Cevat something about how great his game was and how many copy's it should have sold...

Do you acknowledge that possibility?

Of course i do. But that's only the theory. How many people are there out there, who behave exactly like this?

1? 10? 100.000? One million? Would they buy the game, if there were no copies? If there is damage in sales, how much is it? Enough to be bigger than just statistical error?

I simply had enough from assumptions like these suddenly becoming fact. Where is the proof, that unofficial copies are damaging sales in such high numbers, that this should a valid concern for the industry? Where? I am waiting since Napster, since this ridiculous "copying music is killing music" campaign, when tape recorders entered the consumer market, that the content and media industry finally back up their whining with hard facts. And the longer i wait, the more i suspect that they do NOT wish to examine this "en detail", because they know, that unofficial copies are nothing than a minor annoyance and nothing more.

Some games deserve being pir8ed.
Alone in the Dark, Crysis, these are two games that I've bought and they are two games that are not worth purchasing.
Both 'benefit' from Vista and require 2gb under Vista, and 1gb under XP.
While Crysis was a PC game primarily, Alone in the Dark, is a 360 game ported. Badly.

Some games just deserve pir8ing because they don't release demos, they don't support their games after release, and they don't beta test properly.

I am spending fifteen minutes loading Alone in the Dark's main menu and then the menu is a damned .BIK playing! So I load a level, another fifteen minutes!
Anytime I die, five minutes.

Fuck you Crytek, your games always suck and your engines are exceptionally demanding. Not a good mix.
Fuck you Atari, you had your day and now you just don't know how to handle yourselves as quality controllers.

Some games, just don't deserve to be bought. Companies that know this, won't release demos.
Valve releases their games over the course of a weekend. Atari could do that too, release Alone in the Dark for a week over Steam with a two day license or a day license or something.
Honestly... what a concept, right?
If some kid can beat it in a day (cause guys like me, WITH JOBS don't have the time), then KUDOS! Chances are he isn't going to have it bought for him.

Move along, y'know?

Man... some companies just deserve it. How many more years are we going to complain about information control when it's not really an issue.

Based on what? Any evidence, any proof? Or just repeating, what others say? Or just assuming something and then stopping to think about it?
Let's not be ridiculous, okay? No one's doubting they may exaggerate to make excuses for failure or shifting platforms (sheep that they are). No one's doubt the fact that many who pirate wouldn't have bought the game anyway, or even that piracy may actually even serve as word-of-mouth in many cases.

But if you want to see 'proof' of damage, all you really need to do is find one legitimate case where a person who wanted the game and could have bought it, would have, if they hadn't stolen it instead. Do you acknowledge that possibility?

Now multiply that times many thousands.

This is an Us vs. Them situation, and that's all fine and dandy, but the pirates are taking it too far, and destroying the very medium they love to plunder.

I have no doubt piracy hurts developers,

Based on what? Any evidence, any proof? Or just repeating, what others say? Or just assuming something and then stopping to think about it?

And what form of "piracy" do you refer to? Commercial piracy? Or just school boys downloading stuff, they can't even remotely afford to buy?

I have no doubt piracy hurts developers, but I think they grossly exaggerate the effects out of frustration for poor sales as it is the easy go-to excuse. It's also a good excuse for moving to console development.

So you put forward a suggestion and then discount it? Genius.

Who is discounting it? Just because the majority of people who pirate my not buy the game that still doesn't mean it was a lost sale.

What matter is the number of people like myself who go out and buy it after downloading it.

I know it is much easier to insult rather than discuss.

what's wrong with trying a demo? People use a time limited demo to buy cars and houses

Do you test drive a real car or one with just some of the features or one that will be different from the final version?

If I like the game and it works well I go out and buy it. I know this isn't done by the majority
