On Impulse & User Content

In checking out Stardock's new Impulse service, GameCyte went to the unusual extent of actually reading the EULA, discovering details that may help Impulse better compete with platforms like Steam. Among the legalese are terms outlining 50/50 profit-sharing for user-created content sold over the service. It's not 100% clear what form this content is to take (they were unable to get a comment from Stardock), but the obvious implication is game modifications. Since users are accustomed to getting game modifications for free, this may be an uphill climb, but on the other hand mod authors are accustomed to not being compensated for their efforts, so there may be motivation on their end to give in to this Impulse.

If you would like your mod distributed/sold through Impulse this arrangement exists.

Mods outside the service are still free... The same way it works on Steam.

This is my interpretation as well. It seems like a good method for those wishing to distribute their work online for a price without some other company claiming complete ownership and the lions share of the profits. One thing I didn't see or notice if people could use this to distribute material for free. If that's not an option it'd be nice if it were.

I'm not really sold on the name though... Naming a service after the mini-isle right by the check out stand filled with candy, stupid 'news' papers and other useless crap people buy because they have no self control isn't exactly the best idea.
