On Impulse & User Content

In checking out Stardock's new Impulse service, GameCyte went to the unusual extent of actually reading the EULA, discovering details that may help Impulse better compete with platforms like Steam. Among the legalese are terms outlining 50/50 profit-sharing for user-created content sold over the service. It's not 100% clear what form this content is to take (they were unable to get a comment from Stardock), but the obvious implication is game modifications. Since users are accustomed to getting game modifications for free, this may be an uphill climb, but on the other hand mod authors are accustomed to not being compensated for their efforts, so there may be motivation on their end to give in to this Impulse.

There and pros and cons to the potential of this, just like with anything. Really depends on how its done.

But I'm with Sponge, nothing on Impulse appeals to me (at least nothing that I cant already get on Steam), not even SINS, just not my kinda game, neither is GC.

So with that said I dont see the user benefit for charging for mods on that system. I'm already very selective on what mods I use my time to try out, because there are so many bad ones. Why would I pay even a $1 to try out an end-user mod when I probably wasn't going to try it even for free?

Valve already selectively promotes free mods through Steam, which I would love to see more of, and with a better system for easy install/uninstall directly through Steam. But how is charging for a mod going to help the mod creators if nobody buys it anyways? $2 Horse mod anyone?
