Mass Effect DRM Issues?

The Mass Effect Community Forums have word on issues with the SecuROM copy protection in the PC edition of Mass Effect. Users have run into issues with the software allowing only three activations, and some users have expressed concern over how the software seems to want to "phone home" via the internet, though reports in this area are a bit vague. Thanks Mike Martinez, Simprograms, and Slashdot.

as long as the suits who work at game companies are convinced they need copy protection on their games, there will be copy protection on games. There have been several debacles and still we have copy protection.

We have now put measures in place to make re-activation easier and we encourage you to contact EA Customer Support for assistance if you receive this message.
Truely doing the former would eliminate the latter.

What the hell is wrong with that?! If someone has two or three PC's in their home, that would use up the installations right there. When a game costs $50 expecting the customer to buy three copies of the game because he wants to be able to play it in different rooms at different times is too much to ask.

Derek, I understand you want to protect your product, but in this case, it's really shitty the way this was handled.

And as others have pointed out, your game is cracked anyway, so it didn't stop those that wanted to pirate it from doing so.

Copy protection only hurts paying customers. You know, the ones that buy your games and help you stay afloat?

The only thing I'm surprised about is that it took this long before seeing this topic. Seemed to happen alot sooner with Bioshock.
That's because a working Bioshock crack supposedly took longer to be publicly available than with Mass Effect. Most people who encountered problems with Mass Effect's DRM probably turned to Google to find a crack whereas with Bioshock it took longer for a real crack to showup in the results so they complained to Take 2 first.

Mass Effect has DRM issues?! You don't say.

Those users reporting these issues after buying the game should have had the good sense to read posts in these forums and others warning of these issues before the game was released. Anyone who didn't know about the three activations tied to their PC's hardware configuration before buying the game simply didn't do their homework. Of course EA and Bioware didn't help matters by putting out misleading statements and information about the game's SecuROM copy-protection.

You can contact them, sure. They won't do shit to HELP you, but hey, at least you'll feel better knowing you spent 30 minutes of your life talking to the most customer unfriendly organization ever to disgrace planet Earth.

The Nazis had better customer service than EA.

Maybe they'll call you a thief for your trouble?

I have securom on my machine from bioshock, it works fine, never given me any problems whatsoever. like 99.9% of people with it on their machines.
Pity the 0.1% rant and rave like the world is ending in predictable fashion. It isn't.
Running securom is probably not a problem for virtually everyone, the problem comes in when you reinstall the game several times. I think that would seem quite obvious.

I bought Bioshock the other day. I had downloaded it in the past and played it for a couple zones, then I left it for an eventual purchase.

The original works, but I found very odd problems with it. For example, the game came with no keys bound for harvesting or saving the little sisters, and the controls config wouldn't let me to bind them. Also the video options reset every time I run the game... none of this stuff happened back with the DL. I doubt it's securom's fail, but... still hurts buying something, patching it and getting problems.

No surprises there. Only StarForce is a bigger POS than SecuROM.

Oh, and it didn't took nine days, it was broken in TWO

Yet another example the DRM hurts sales. How many of those having problems will buy EA's next game with SecuROM protection?

BTW: +1000 to the previous comment. How I'd love to unleash that guy with a shotgun in Ubi's offices!

Reminded me of this:

And I'm still not buying EA games anymore. You shouldnt either. So I really dont pity him or other people who have problems with copy protections.

i thought the purpose of build up character is play to ur strength, don't try to do everything, u got henchman for that.
if u want to balance the main character, all u get is mediocre avatar.

Not really. If you play long enough, you get to a high enough level that you can probably max everything out anyway.

this game bore the hell out of me.
reminds me of jade empire.....long dialog...blah...blah, nothing like kotor.it is supposed to be rpg but i like the action part not the character building.
and what is the point if u can't control ur other party member or use their abilities;forces u to balance the main character which is dumb, i think.

You may be surprised to know this, but inside the plastic case that the DVD came in is a little book that tells you how to play the game! Do yourself a favor and spend a little quality time with it next time you have to take a dump. Unless you downloaded it. In which case, DIAF.

Ahh, you didn't even read the post...

He installed it(1), got crappy peformance.
Rebuilt his OS, clean install (2), same performance problem.
Replaced his older vid card with an 8800GT(3), was happy, played through etc.

10 days later, the game is disabled and saying he needs to buy a new copy.

He has a registered code (his username has ME PC and Xbox in his list of registered games).

There is something wrong with the DRM, and *surprise surprise* pirates are playing with no invasion of privacy and no activation problems using the NO.. err, SC patch? =)

idiots.

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of that going around atm...

The point is, a paying customer (which he has proven) cannot play the game whereas a pirate can. I'd just advise him to get the damn crack and be done with it.

It reminds you of Dragon Age. DRAGON AGE. The game that hasn't been released yet, and so far has received a grand total of about 2 previews in three years time. That's what it reminds you of?
