Spore System Requirements

Shacknews has posted system requirements for Spore, EA Maxis' upcoming evolution game. They offer further details, but here's the overview, which seems pretty modest:
FOR WINDOWS XP
    • 2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
    • 512 MB RAM
    • A 128 MB Video Card, with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
    • At least 6 GB of hard drive space

FOR WINDOWS VISTA
    • 2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
    • 768 MB RAM
    • A 128 MB Video Card, with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
    • At least 6 GB of hard drive space

SPORE would make an excellent game for schools. It teaches so many concepts: intelligent design, evolution, caring for things, responsibility, building a community with fellow players, ecology, biology, environment, science, technology, construction, management... that's the stuff off-hand.

nin, good to see you got your login sorted.

To be fair, Frans and Blue did the sorting. I just did the mucking up beforehand.

edit: We've still not heard about who did the deletes, however...

As a developer, I agree 100%, although I'm often shouted down for mentioning it

Members of the demo scene were consulted and hired to help create this game.

These requirements are thousands of times higher than what they usually limit themselves to.

128mb of videocard memory has very little to do with model poly count.

this does seem decidedly purported, if not completely finktional.

128 mb of video memory, eh? they must have hired a band of WoW modelers to produce this content...
for the record, i do not play WoW.
also, former and predecessor effectively mean the same thing.

I'm going to guess these are minimal rather than recommended requirements. While those are very nice for the 'will look and run like poo' requirements, it'd be nice to know on what sort of system it'll run well and look good on.

What are they going to do with 6 gigs of hard drive space? Maybe that's for installation only.

Honestly, aside from lazy development, I have no idea how developers can suck up as much space as they do these days... aside from the times when they pack a DVD full of fmv.

the difference is that 95 and xp are totally different, while xp and vista are the same except vista is worse

Vista kicks XPs ass if it's 64 bit. If you've got a machine designed for XP then it's not really a good OS for you, for 4 gigs of RAM and up it's very nice.

Vista is to XP what Win2k was to WinME and Win95 was to Win3.11.

I'd say more that Vista is to XP that WinME is to Win95.
They're similar in many ways, but vastly different in others, and the former SUCKED way more than the predecessor.

XP and Vista are definitely not the same.

Vista is to XP what Win2k was to WinME and Win95 was to Win3.11. A huge change under the hood instead of just incremental upgrades.

Win7 will be to Vista what XP was to Win2k and Win98/WinME was to Win95. An incremental upgrade instead of a huge change under the hood.

Win98 wastes 64MB compared to the 4kb on my Atari 2600. Instead of thinking just of RAM usage, put in terms of cost. How much does 256MB cost nowadays? $10 to $20?
