Call of Duty 5 Details - Co-op Support

Computer and Video Games has details from OXM on the next Call of Duty game, which will not be called Call of Duty 5, but rather Call of Duty: World at War, a return to the World War II setting in the works at Treyarch Studios. Word is the game will center around the Pacific theatre, though Russia's advance on Berlin will also be depicted. There's also word that the military shooter sequel's use of the engine from CoD4 creates a grittier and scarier environment than previous CoD games, and a further blurb on Videogaming247 mentions target platforms as PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii (the version for the latter platform is being developed separately), and the hopeful news from both articles is the game will include cooperative multiplayer support. No release date is projected at this point. Thanks Voodoo Extreme.

I see two problems with this game already.

1. WWII I think this setting is completely finished!
2. Treyarch Studios (Not impressed here at all with this dev. house)

die by the sword was a great game, but i haven't played any of their console crap only because consoles blow. ww2 will never diminish its attraction - over 50 million people died. the addition of CO-OP is great news.

WWII I think this setting is completely finished!

If you invest the time to read more than the first sentence, you will notice that the second one begins Word is the game will center around the Pacific theatre... I don't recall doing the Battle of Guadalcanal in anything except an RTS and maybe a flight sim. The Pacific theatre should feel pretty fresh in an FPS.

Where is my World War I game? Trench warfare, suicide charges against machine guns, and the first major uses of chemical weapons.

What's the problem? Not every release is going to have major engine advancements and the COD4 engine is certainly good enough for a while.

NEway, I'm not convinced returning to WWII is a great idea. There have been so many conflicts in history it seems a real copout to go for the most obvious and overused one. I mean for fuck's sake there's a war in Iraq at the moment and conflicts in Sudan yet they're left alone because it's politically safer to dig up a 60yr old war. Pathetic.

Wow, I really thought they would focus on the Vietnam theater. The Pacific theater is cool but we need a really good FPS Vietnam shooter.

I agree. Once again, this is going to be less than stellar and yet another CoD series Black mark for Treyarch.

I agree with you, Iraq would have been very cool; but my guess is that (a) they're afraid of the politics associated with it (b) they don't like working with a Brownish palette

Vietnam would have been *awesome*.

WWII has been done to death and I for one can't possibly imagine why they'd want to do that again. Hey, at the end of the day, the gamers will speak. Gamers flop this one and (a) they won't do it again (b) it will probably be Game Over for Treyarch

If its splitscreen co-op, then they can count on my purchase.

Not too many FPS have taken place in the Pacific Theatre of WWII, outside of Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault. I imagine sales won't be too good in Japan.

Still, I see they couldn't totally resist the call of the Nazis by throwing in a European-set campaign.

COD4 is great because it is done by the same people who did COD1 and COD2...

COD5 is not being done by those people.

I will believe it when I see it. To many games have said that they will have Co-op only to dump it before release.

necrosis hit the nail on the head. Too many times games have promised co-op. Then at release everyone is like, "wtf is my co-op?" We are then told that there was not enough funding, resources, etc. to include co-op. I call BS.

Oh great, back to Treyarch. This probably won't be very good on the PC.

It'll be fine. I enjoyed CoD3, I thought Treyarch did a good job for not being Infinity Ward. The single-player wasn't as good as IW's style, but the MP was plenty'a fun.

The Pacific Theater for an FPS hasn't really been done right yet, so it's a good opportunity. I have a feeling it will have a fairly decent "Vietnam" feel to the engagements. Close combat, ambushes, unseen enemy, etc, all elements that make jungle combat a scary proposition. The only difference between that and Vietnam are the weapons.

I have high hopes it'll be worth the money. Won't be ground-breaking, as CoD3 certainly wasn't, but it was worth the dough.

I feel the same way. I was surprised how decent of a job Treyarch did keeping the insane pacing of IW's gameplay intact.
