S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky DX10 Footage

PCGH has new video from S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky showing off the DirectX 10 graphics in GSC Game World's upcoming first-person prequel. The thing is this is a ShakyCam™ trailer that was shot off a monitor, which is a less than ideal way to show off visuals, though they do a respectable job with the camerawork.

I liked the first one. No issues at all.

THough I do think it funny how people think this was a RPG type game when it was a FPS

My experience wasn't as bad as Ray's. In fact, I had very, very few performance issues.

No, I just got tired of going through sewers then clearing the same little bad guy camp 400 times. Tired of going back and forth through the same spot. Tired of having killed 400 guys in like, 3 days, yet not having people worship me as a god despite me clearly being the best stalker. Tired of a slow moving plot that was painfully obvious from the start.

I found the game quite easy, but quite boring. I just didn't like having to walk back and forth all the damn time. Why did I need to go through three load screens to get to a place I'd already been?

Bad plot, bad RPG elements, redundant locals, firefights that often get repeated for no reason... I lost interest quickly and found very little that stood out in the game.

Unfortunately, as immersive as the environments were in STALKER, they were completely static. No destructible or physics-enabled things whatsoever except maybe one or two explosive barrels, and crates.

But STALKER didn't need destructibility or physics.

Oblivion was the exact same type of hyperpolishing that HL2 was.
It was freeform and open, allowing you to wander about and create your own experience - it wasn't a mostly-on-rails experience like Ep2. I don't want to enter the whole Morrowind / Oblivion debate but I find it interesting that Oblivion scores considerably higher on Metacritic... it's not the definite quality test but certainly an indicator. That's certainly not how it appears here with people constantly bitching about Oblivion. I think people had too high expectations - I went in with an open mind and was blown away by it (despite many shortcomings).

Nice video, neat looking game. I haven't played the original (don't think my aging PC would handle it).

I'd like to see a video of stuff getting blown up though, like those flimsy shelters, it looks like everything should be easily destructible.

Jeez, Ray - did we play the same game? Although I did have the odd NPC burn himself to death in a fire which I found immensely amusing, so I didn't get too annoyed.

I didn't have nearly the bad experience you did. I thought Stalker was great. Flawed? Sure Fun? Oh yeah!

Oblivion was a good example of a freeform and open gameplay and the "accidental genius" you speak..

ack!! *spits coffee on screeen*.

Oblivion was the exact same type of hyperpolishing that HL2 was. It has lost the genius that was Morrowind...which was much more freeform and open gameplay.

And (to go off at a tangent) it also serves as a reminder that the hyper-polished HL2 episodes have lost some of the "accidental genius" that made HL1 the game it was.
I think it's a limitation of the style they have opted for. Oblivion was a good example of a freeform and open gameplay and the "accidental genius" you speak of and Far Cry 2 looks to do a similar to the FPS genre - STALKER is a game inbetween the two. I didn't enjoy the original but I'm hopeful Clear Sky will improve the experience, both graphically and from a gameplay perspective. Personally I would like to see more open and freeform worlds, though the storydriven nature of Ep2 makes it possibly my favourite game to date.

I've been replaying this recently, in couple of hour bursts at a time... it is deeply flawed but I can still forgive it because I found it so immersive and enjoyable.

In no way, shape, or form will I be touching this game.

After my previous discussion about this, I went back and tried to play Shadow of Chernobyle again.

And where do I start?

Broken A.I.?

Completed quests still showing up in my log and on the map, but giving me failure messages when their timer runs out, resets, and runs out again to infinity?

Bizarre respawn timers?

A storyline quest that I cannot complete due to the NPC not existing in the area?

Insanely accurate NPCs from unfathomable distances?

Unable to turn in another quest because the NPC walked into and died atop a campfire?

Friendly NPCs attacking me randomly until I reload?

Weak, inaccurate weapons?

NPCs that magically track and attack me through walls? With bonus points for the ones that manage to hurt me?

NPCs that were never there, but magically appear right behind you (and I'm not talking about the end-game Monolith segments)?

Massive performance spikes akin to a memory leak that clear up after just standing place for a few seconds?

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. I would have to go back and play Gothic 3 to see which had the buggier piece of sh*t programming.

And the asshats at GSC have the audacity to try and dangle out the hopes of further patching, but not until they release Clear Sky for people to purchase?

It is even more saddening because SoC could have been a really great game. It tried to do sometehing that most games do not try and it is set in a really neat world. However, GSC so completely botched that game that my core memories are anger, frustration, disgust, and time wasted on technical issues.

Until they patch SoC to be a 100% playable game or refund my purchase, I refuse to spend any additional money on GSC and its products.
Any why should they when the market will eat up this type of crap?
Edit: And what is the point of this game? I'm looking at its stite and all its hype is based around "What created the zone?!?" Are they just negating the C-Consciousness decision from the first game? /CashCow

Wanting to love the game, but so utterly annoyed with its bugs,
Ray

Graphics sell titles. Hence the focus on them. The gameplay improvements to be added are documented as well on the game's website.

The cover system only applies to AI. Which is good, because a cover system in a first-person shooter is retarded when you can already crouch and lean.

And lets hope they haven't "improved" gameplay. I like the gameplay just the way it is.

they have added a cover system. not sure if that is an improvement or not, we shall have to see.
