DNF Trailer (Or Lack Thereof) Follow-up

Shacknews has follow-up on indications that the upcoming debut of the "Jace Hall Show" will include "an exclusive trailer to the long-anticipated Duke Nukem Forever game" (story). 3D Realms themselves fueled the fire of speculation by posting in their forums, "This show may have landed the greatest scoop of all time in the history of gaming… We shall see!" Subsequently George Broussard offered a response to Shacknews wondering what all the fuss is about:
I have no knowledge of any new trailer. I'd tell you if I did.

This is something we did for Jason months ago and it's not quite going to be what you expect. We didn't want him unveiling the game at that point so the piece was done as a favor for Jason, who we've known for 15 years.

I just don't want people getting too excited over this. The teaser trailer in Dec was about all the teasing we'd planned on. We weren't sure when, or if, this show would ever appear. I look forward to seeing what Jason did with the show. I can promise you that the next time you see the game it'll be in substantial form.

Are you really saying that Duke and Crysis are THAT different? I think you must be joking. An SUV and a sports car? Apples and Oranges? I have to think you must mean that they LOOK totally different, right? I tried to use the Kung-fu movie metaphore but nobody even commented on it. I think it perfectly sums up the similarties.

I'm saying that they are so similar (to use your car analogy)that Duke Nukem would be a Blue 1996 Ferrari and Crysis a Red 2007 Ferrari. To say that they're like an SUV and a Ferrari is insane. That would be like suggesting that I'm comparing a Flight Simulator with a WWII first person shooter.

EVERY first person shooter (that isn't in WWII) has aliens, powered suits, and healthpacks. You can't even admit that the abilities of the suit in crysis give REMARKABLY similar abilities to the "powerups" in duke nukem? The setting? The freeze weapons? You seriously think they're NOTHING like each other?

To me, they're both fun games; they just happen to be very VERY similar. And yet, Duke Nukem 3d is hailed as the pixilated second coming of christ and Crysis gets a ton of crap for doing the same thing, in a purly action movie style.

Quake 4 and Half-Life 2 also both feature aliens, powered suits and healthpacks. There are a lot of common traits shared by first person shooters but that doesn't mean they are alike, just like not all games in the RTS genre are alike.

What I actually IMPLIED was that they were more or less the same style game
They're in the same genre but other than the standards genre traits they are very different... an SUV and a Ferrari have things in common but no-one would say they're the same style vehicle. You are, quite simply, wrong.

Duke3D and Crysis are nothing alike, much in the same way that Quake 4 and Half-Life 2 are nothing alike. Please put down the crackpipe

These are all taken from the game's respective wiki articles:

Murderous aliens have landed in futuristic Los Angeles the tropical south pacific

The game features a wide range of monsters, some of which are aliens, others mutated humans are koreans

This is perhaps the most anticipated and impressive weapon in Crysisduke nukem 3d. The Molecular Arrestor freeze gun will fire a beam freezing almost any object. The frozen object can then fired upon and shattered.

Duke Nukem 3DCrysis is set "sometime in the early 21st century"

These locations are also filled with objects that the player can interact with (including light switches, toilets, urinals, pool tables, arcade games, closed-circuit cameras, and strippers).

Duke Nukem 3D's Crysis's graphic engine was an evolutionary step forward from the Doom FarCry engine

Aside from weapons, Nukem's Crysis's inventory also includes a series of items that can be picked up during play. A portable medkit allows players to heal themselves whenever they choose to. Steroids A Nanotech supersuit speed up player movement making transit through hostile territory easier. Nightvision gogglesincluded in your nanotech supersuit allow players to see enemies in the dark. The "HoloDuke"nanotech supersuit includes a cloaking device projects a hologram of Duke that can be used to distract enemies. A Protective boots nanotech supersuit allows the player to cross dangerously hot or toxic terrain. Where progress requires more aquatic legwork, a n aqua-lung (called scuba gear) nanotech supersuit allows the player to take longer trips away from air. Perhaps most impressively, Duke's trademark jetpack a jet allows the player to range fully in 3D, often to reach hidden weapons caches or extra health.

Im pretty sure no one noticed this so Im bringing it to your notice that Wallace here tried to imply that Crysis is better than Duke3d....

And you're saying it isn't? For all the hate it's getting, Crysis is a pretty cool open world shooter for the first part, and a so-so straight on rails heavy action sci fi shooter for the latter part.

Duke was a linear semi-3D shooter with some funny bits thrown in.

Ignoring technology (Obviously Crysis looks 1000000000000 times better), I think Crysis has more gameplay in it than Duke3D.

And if you want to compare Crysis to DNF, Crysis has the advantage that it's actually OUT.

"if you think Crysis is a good game you should go buy a console right now! And I mean right now presto!!! GO GO GO !"

I fail to understand your point. I like Crysis, and I own two consoles. I'm also convinced that I've been playing PC games either just as long, or much longer than you.

What I actually IMPLIED was that they were more or less the same style game except that Duke had decent comedy/action movie elements and Crysis had decent action movie elements. Neither had characters I gave a rat's ass about. I NEVER said Crysis was better but you won't even admit Duke had its faults! Faults I tried to point out and YOU ignored. You didn't get the impression that I liked Duke3d from the references I used? Did you even play duke?

What I actually SAID was Duke is a Jackie Chan movie and Crysis is a Bruce Lee movie. Maybe you're a kung-fu movie snob too, but the idea was that Jackie Chan makes GOOFY action and Bruce Lee makes SERIOUS action. NEITHER are going to win any Oscars but they are different types of FUN. Different takes on the same concept. Understand? (I happen to enjoy Jackie Chan movies more and, oddly enough, I happen to remember liking Duke3d more than I like Crysis)

You seem to have a lot of strong non(?) homosexual feelings for Duke. Hey, I liked Duke Nukem too. It was a great game in its time. It had its faults, but it was great. Crysis? meh. It's very pretty and the setting allows for some of those pretty graphics to show through. Straight action is all too common in games while the humor that duke brought to the table was (and still is) pretty unique. So I ask you again, where does the HATE for Crysis come from? Did Crysis bang your mom? It's an "Okay to Good" action game that happens to look better than anything else on the market, PC or console.

Is there anything I said that we don't agree on in any of that?

And there's that game snobbery again. If you think Crysis is a "good" game then go buy a console? You sir are a total snob.

The hate for 3d Realms in here is almost palpable. Seriously. What's up with that? I mean, Duke 3d was FUN in its day, had loads of mods (remember the two porno ones? the Aliens one was AWESOME) I know I loved it but I know I've played much better since. Still had loads of fun with it regardless. But does anbody remember TEN? Total Entertainment Network? Didn't you have to PAY to play Duke3d online unless you had Kali? If Duke 3d came out today, it would be Crysis with crappy online play (though the Coop certainly was nice...)that you pay for, in a city environment, with a few one-liners and more over-the-top macho 'tude. Oh and some strippers.

I'm just not sure why Crysis is getting so much crap from people and why people are SOOOOO looking forward to a new Duke Nukem game. Gameplay wise, substitute Duke's gags ("we meet again Dr. Jones!") and jokes for Crysis's action set pieces and they play essentially the same way. Duke had a few memorable weapons but in the end Duke is a Jackie Chan movie, Crysis is a Bruce Lee movie.

When it comes out it's almost certain to be a headliner for the PC and if it stays PC exclusive, it could be the title that reminds the industry why the PC is THE platform for blockbuster shooters. (as long as certain people don't download it instead of paying for it. in which case, not even a banner PC property can survive the piracy that is so rampant)

It has been a very long time, and its enjoyable to poke fun, but some people here actually seem angry at 3D Realms, which is just beyond my understanding. Why?

'Cause many of us who grew up with gaming take it very seriously and feel passionate about it. Yeah, in the end they're all just games, and thus not too high on the importance meter when compared to issues of real import. Yet they still illicit strong feelings nontheless from a lot of the gamer faithful. I am not angry, per se, but definitely annoyed at how incompetent Broussard and company have turned out to be.

I don't know what's worst, 3D Realms still talking about DNF like it's actually coming out anytime soon (if at all) or the people defending 3D Realms talking about DNF actually coming out soon.

I mean shit, it's almost 2010 and I still don't have a flying car like I was promised back in the mid 80's, what makes you think anything will be different with 3D Realms and DNF?

Every time I see talk about 3D Realms now-a-days it reminds me of an old PC shop I use to go to back in the late 80's, walking in and seeing a fat guy in his mid 20s wearing black plastic rimmed glasses sitting behind the counter and a shelf full of POS PC/Apple games packaged in zip lock bags, only to go into that same PC shop 20 some years later to see the same fat guy sitting behind the counter now in his mid 40s who has now upgraded to wire framed glasses but with the same POS games still sitting on his shelf.

That's what George and 3D Realms reminds me of.

Sorry George, but the truth hurts.

This game will NEVER see the light of day simply because it has and has had for a looooooong time, Daikatana Syndrome. Good or bad, if it were released, it would be crucified.

No, if DNF turns out to be awesome, that'll be the exact opposite of Daikatana Syndrome. People crucified Daikatana because it was a bad game and not even remotely deserving of the hype it got. If DNF turns out to be a great game, it still won't live up to the hype but people will enjoy it nonetheless.

SamuraiSaint,

I tried to use some tact on that post. I guess it was lost on you. No big surprise there. So I won't use any here.

YOU are the one who is clueless. You aren't talking to someone such as yourself. I know what I am talking about. The real talent at 3DRealms left long ago.

Are you daft? Do you get it? Hell no they haven't hired any real talent in 20 years. Do YOU see a fucking game on the shelf? No? Then shut your mouth.

No one needs yet another person like you bringing your inane pointless drivel on here trying to lament to us about how good of a company 3d Realms is and how the rest of us just don't understand your higher thought processes. Your internet ego doesn't impress. Your act has been done countless times before. 3D Realms stopped being a good company 15 years ago. Period. You embarrass yourself.

"You are completely and utterly clueless and unfortunately sites like this one give people like you a place to post your utter nonsense."
Yes, and you bring such incredible intelligence with your posts. LOL. Isn't it wonderful that everyone gets to voice their opinion even though you deem them unworthy? You are a fool. It's very simple. You believe everything you read on the internet and that itself is quite sad. I pity you.

Now, take your holier-than-thou attitude and go fuck your gay brother with it.

Awww did I hurt your feelings so you looked up some "big" words to use to rebuttle me with a smack down...

(I was level designing with the Doom and Build engines when you were likely drooling over your first pacifier)
