Personally I find that most (not all) storylines for games over the years have not added much to the games. They provide a setting, beyond that they have been rather pointless. There is of course the exceptions, but does gaming NEED to have strong and well written stories to make a game good? No. And as far as I'm concerned that has never been the case with games. It's certainly a bonus when it does happen though.
I also don't care if we see games tackle heavy racial storylines, or kids and violence, etc, etc. Do we really want to see a game that pits blacks vs neo-nazi groups or allows people to chop up kids into little pieces (Manhunt isn't enough?)? What purpose does that serve? None, as far as I'm concerned. Of course someone has the right to make it, I just doubt I'll be buying a game that focuses on racism as it's main story and gameplay focus.
I buy games for gameplay, not for story. Never will you see me buy a game I think I will dislike the gameplay, just because it has a good story. But you will always see me choose a game with good gameplay even if the story sucks or is non-existant.
