However, Messiah comes to mind as a game that has a baby as the primary character, Alice would be another with a child as the main character.
But no starring roles with dialogue.
Racial themes...have you not played any of the GTA games? I seem to recall several racial groups whining about how they are portrayed in all 3 GTA games. How about the stink made over Resident Evil 5 having mostly black zombies since it takes place in Africa?
Having characters of a different race is not dealing with racial issues. San Andreas was a good example of using race to add depth to the storyline but it's the exception to the rule.
Explicit sex...while maybe not explicit...Single Life comes to mind, GTA games all allow you to pick up whores and watch the outcome. There is TONS of Hentai games, they just aren't popular in North America.
I'm talking about games that aim at the mass market, rather than falling into the 'perverted' category. The Nomad Soul touched on it nearly a decade back (I remember because of the association with David Bowie) and there was talk about sexual themes in Mass Effect (haven't played it myself yet) but still nothing using it as a main theme. That's not to say it's the future of the gaming industry but it would be nice to see gaming deal with as wide a variety of subjects as movies / television.
There's a pile of gamers that do remember the glory days of well written games, with good stories
There's still a lot about. HL2 Ep2 pushed storytelling beyond anything before it and games like Oblivion used top-tier actors and an epic setting to create an atmosphere unlike anything before it. We've also had The Witcher and Bioshock trying new things with plots. Sure there's plenty of shit about but I think it's wrong to keep looking back for a golden age - we have plenty to be happy about.
Interesting to note, getting back on topic, is that Crysis used an old style of storytelling and cliches and it failed. Sure there were the technical aspects as well as many other things but after Ep2 and Oblivion it seemed shit going back to the spoon-fed style of old that Crysis went for.
