Despite the lack of any solid proof, I'll agree that piracy can hurt profits in many cases. However, I disagree that piracy is the reason why games fail or why developers jump to consoles.
No no no, I never stated that piracy is the
sole reason why games fail. But it is one of the reasons. Just because high system costs, the complexity of PC gaming, bad marketing etc. are also valid factors doesn't mean you can safely ignore piracy.
No, it's betrayal because you can still survive by making PC-exclusive games. If that weren't the case, there wouldn't be any PC-exclusive developers. All you need to do to survive is make enough profit to fund your next project. Unfortunately, this isn't good enough for publishers and most developers.
Game developers and publishers are businesses. Individual artists and artistic integrity cannot survive in the gaming
business alone. The soul of a business is to make money, and provide the maximum return for your investors. Once you accept this you'll realize that the potential for a game to make money is THE deciding factor on whether it gets made or not. # of copies sold is what's important, and when you leave it to the marketing suits to do their risk analysis thing, every potential loss from piracy weighs against a game's chance of survival.
