Steam Cloud Plans

Maximum PC has a report on an event where Valve unveiled new features planned for an upcoming Steam update, including automatic driver updates for hardware and an integrated system requirements checker for games. Here's a bit on the Steam Cloud:
Community enhancements include improved event planning – RSVP, calendar functions, and official communities are all part of the feature list. Gamers will be able to coordinate tournaments, use calendars to check up on their friends, and join communities set up by game publishers and developers.

The biggest news is that game-generated data will now be stored with your Steam accounts in Valve servers. This includes game profiles, configuration settings, and even savegames! Valve will first be rolling this feature out to existing games like the Half-Life franchise, TF2, Counter-Strike. Left4Dead will be the first new game to remotely save your progress.

It's a GREAT idea for people that travel, if it's implemented correctly. I would love to be able to play lego star wars on my laptop, and then pickup from the exact same spot on my home computer without having to mess around shuffling savegame files from computer to computer.

Why the fuck would I want my savegames on your servers, rather than on MY harddisk?
It stores save games on your computer, then uploads them later when an internet connection is present. I would MUCH prefer save games to be stored online, with a backup on the computer, because I've lost them on too many occasions due to system fuckups.

I am hoping that more indie games come through Steam. I'd rather have one system, then have several serial codes for different games with different limitations on installs. I recently had a game that I had installed 3 times in the past, and wanted to install it again, so I had to email the developer and wait for a reply. That has happened before, too.

Also, sometimes I want to play an older game, and the hassle of installing it, looking for updates, looking for old saves (for games I only got partway through), fixing the config, just isn't worth it.

Although Steam is something of a DRM system, the extra features easily outweigh the disadvantages for me.

No one that visits BN would ASK for it...

Speak for yourself. Just because someone wants a feature out of convenience doesn't make them a sheep. You must be reading too many of Jerykks 'I'm a PC snob' posts.

Personally I was wishing this feature existed before they even mentioned that it was something they were looking into adding into Steam (roughly a year ago?). I don't want to micro-manage my save games and configs. It's a PITA. I've lost saves from formats, hard drive crashes, unable to find all related files when backing up, etc.

Features like this and the driver updates are sure to be toggle controlled by the user. I won't use the driver update feature but I'll definitely use the save game, config storage.

What kind of bullshit is this Valve? Who the fuck in the entire world is actually ASKING for this?

Silly question man. The sheep are. "My computer crashed bla bla bla".

No one that visits BN would ASK for it....it is casual gamers and the masses, not REAL gamers.

Automatic driver updates? Fuck off. I don't need Microsoft to tell me which drivers I need, and I don't need YOU to tell me which drivers I need. There better be a fucking option to turn this bullshit off.

And storing my game-generated data on your servers? To what end? Why the fuck would I want my savegames on your servers, rather than on MY harddisk? Same for my config files?

What kind of bullshit is this Valve? Who the fuck in the entire world is actually ASKING for this?

Driver updates? No thanks, I don't load new drivers unless there is something wrong with a game. Most of the time they break what isn't broken. This just doesn't seem logical to do. It ALREADY tells you when a driver is out of date, I don't see them pushing drivers (someone mentioned liability - perfect way to put it)

Remote save games? Awesome. Never been screwed on it to date, but I would love to not have to hunt down my saves (my docs, some random weird folder, or BURIED in the game folder in some .DAT file) Only downside is if the service is unavailbale, which seems to be few and far between as far as STEAM goes. Maybe 24 hours total since it started? Not bad, go find something else to do for 24 hours every 2 years.

Everything else - I really don't care. Steam communities already have event reminders, etc.

One thing they REALLY need to fix is the 150 or so limit on group lists. You can have as many people in your list as you want, but when you go to view that list, it says "too many people" and you can't see who is doing what without going to the webpage. lame.

Did we ever find out how mOOzilla was able to start using Steam again, after his account was deactivated?

He took his head out of his ass for a few minutes one day?

Hell I may even have fun with it by injecting crap into the p2p network
You get enjoyment from fucking things up for other people? I suppose that's not really a surprise judging by the shit you usually post.

Look in your registry for a hive called P2P.

It's nothing suspicious.

They said last year sometime that they were investigating ways of implementing a P2P system for Steam users, but the biggest hurdle they have is doing so and not opening themselves up to copyright infringement lawsuits from 3rd party companies.

Steam already has the functionality but it is not currently enabled.

uh oh. automated driver updates are not a good idea in so many scenarios. Obviously Valve is aiming to help causual gamers and other gamers will disable this feature. I wonder if this new "feature" will still be around 13 months from now.

Look in your registry for a hive called P2P. I do not wish to share my bandwidth for Valve. I will throttle anything they try to do with their client.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam\P2P

Go look here.

I skip driver revisions all the time. The most recent Nvidia drivers lowered my FPS in Conan. However, I could see getting this for my old man, he's likes to play games but doesn't know shit about computers.
