ME is a major release game so that means it will be re-packaged a few years from now with some other games, and it wont have any copy protection. That is what has happened with other games when repackaged. It is not correct to believe that the (annoying) copy protection will be on all future releases of the game.

I bought the game last Thursday.

I love the fact that I don't need the disc in to play.

I had a couple of CTDs but my gfx drivers were rather old. Updated to the 175.80s and have had zero issues in many hours of play.

Great game!

It's a pretty good bet that a few years down the road, EA will simply shut this server down and say "FUCK YOU CUSTOMERS."

After all, that's been their mantra for the past decade. And I don't buy all this happy feeling hippie "EA has changed, they're good guys now!" bullshit.

I am not on that wagon at all - I just think the argument is petty. And it is obvious by your statement of "I can't think of one".

The sky isn't falling yet....

Mass Effect isn't a multiplayer game....

Do you have an example of a single player game you can no longer play?

I can't think of one, no. But I don't think EA has had an activation scheme for a single player game yet, so the point is kind of moot.

From what I've heard, the crack is working, but the game is buggy, and people with both legit and cracked versions have been running into problems with the galaxy map and saving. You'd think that with a port they could work their issues out with plenty of time, as they've made most of their money already and are now selling to a notoriously finicky and demanding PC gaming market, which will rip any game, dev, publisher, or passing moose a new asshole, just to prove that they have control.

Neither here nor there, in the larger discussion ... but the crack does not work. Or, uh, so I've been told. <cough> So the 24 hour count might have to be extended to 48 or something.

Sure J I know that, but what I'm describing is a growing desperation on the part of crackers who dont have enough new games to crack to "prove" their cracking ability to their peers. When there were several new PC game released every month, some cracks didnt occur for weeks even months because they werent "important" enough games in the eyes of the cracking community.

of course it was cracked quickly. There's so few new PC game releases at this point, the game hackers instantly swarm around any new release to crack it. Think about what the cracking scene was like just 2 years ago and look at it now. They are starved for new games to crack and the only way to earn cred is to be the first to crack a major release game.

It's always been like this. The point is that EA's added protection proved to be useless and only hassles customers, not pirates.

Bought this on Trymedia (EB Games/Gamestop) as an online download, and BOY is it slow. Dribbling down at a bit under 30 Kbytes/sec. I guess their servers must be getting hammered, or else something is very funny.

Soo, I guess the thing to do would be to download it off a torrent so I can actually start playing while I wait for the official version to slouch it way over. And people wonder why piracy is so popular...

Thanks Dev. I've learned my lesson. Next time I'll build a tower. In the meantime I hope laptopvideo2go.com can help keep my expensive brick relevant.

Announcement: Mass Effect has been pirated. It took approximately one day for crackers to break the protection. Well done, EA, you've once again proved that copy-protection is completely and utterly worthless.

Use normal nvidia drivers with modified INF files.
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/
The video driver for laptop situation isn't going to go away any time soon. Basically, dell gets a bigger discount on the chips with the presumption that they will do all the drivers and support, instead of nvidia. Plus, on occasion, some laptops have special features for video cards.
And this isn't only dell, every single laptop maker out there has the same issue, and at some point they stop updating drivers for the older cards.

Since you didn't specify what kinda publisher...
What about quicken? Intuit has stopped allowing you to activate older versions of its turbo tax that now have activation schemes.
Likely its too bad if you want to load up those old tax returns for an audit, you have to hope that the new version works 100% with old files.
Or MS with thier infamous deactivation of the servers for the DRMed music with thier PLAYS4SURE scheme. That just happened this year. Yeah, plays4sure unless we shut it down for you. You can't tell me that MS is losing so much piles of money with that activation server they just had to shut it down, not with the $4 billion they lost on xbox 1 console (including all games sales such as halo 1 & 2)

These companies haven't even gone under, what happens when some publisher goes under?

Ok, it's cracked already. ONE day. That's all it took.

Can someone from EA now explain to me why us buyers have to suffer this futile DRM POS?. Because, obviously, it didn't do its job. Not that we didn't know it.

WRONG!

Show proof of one instance of this please.

Off the top of my head, Motor City, Sims Online and... ehhh... one of the sports titles, I think it was Madden 2K6 or something, had its master authentication server turned off. Did EA do anything to enable these people to play the game they PAID for? No.

GO play it on the console then.....oh wait, same thing.

Bats, that's just fucking stupid. The console version doesn't phone home or any of that shit. It also won't stop me from playing it three years down the road if I happen to have gotten a new 360.
