Bethesda Softworks and Splash Damage

Bethesda Softworks announces a partnership with Splash Damage, who have previously partnered with id Software, saying details about the brand new project they are collaborating on will be revealed over the next few months:

Splash Damage has been recognized by the industry for the quality of its titles and particularly for its skill in creating cutting-edge multiplayer games. The studio has received numerous accolades and awards for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory™, including Game of the Year nods from GameSpy, IGN, and PC Format. Their latest game, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars™, won over 80 Editors’ Choice, E3, Most Wanted, and Game of the Year awards and nominations.

Bethesda Softworks continues to expand its development and publishing reach, with investments in a library of AAA titles and the opening of new offices in Europe and Japan in the past year. Best known for its 2006 Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion®, Bethesda has in development a number of compelling titles, including the highly-anticipated Fallout® 3 due in Fall 2008.

Call of Juarez had environments that would catch on fire and the fire would spread realistically. I think Sniper Elite had wind affecting your aim as well. Worms definitely had wind affecting your aim.

Fly Im pretty sure we will run out of oil before any of the shit you are talking about will ever be implemented in games, and then no one will be thinking about games anymore.

Could this annoucement be related to the PC Gamer thing/hint???

I think you misunderstood my ideas.

Ubisoft is taking the first step with environments able to catch fire, wind/weather affecting the player, better physics, etc.

The next step is creating A.I to build things. Peter Molyneux has been working on this for years.

Now imagine for example if in GTA 4 the environments were destructable. Now take that a step further and add the addition of weather/fires and sporadic natural disasters. Now make the A.I or player able to repair/rebuild things. Not by simply having the pieces form from spawnpoints or parts found during a quest.

Imagine if for example when playing WOW,earthquakes could happen or severe storms could happen altering and opening up new regions to explore. Maybe on a certain date a certain race of beings would visit the game and give/grant players the gift of flight? Whether it be in the form of technology or simply taking them somewhere for a certain time and awarding them with special items to allow them to get there. It's all possible.

Gmod is a program that comes to mind for some of these ideas. The mechanics using physics to make something is truly the step into the future.

Finally throw it all online in a massive persistent expanding world. Yes this would all be hard to do. But game companies are taking steps to get there.

Wow. The creators of two of my favourite online shooters and the makers of one of my biggest RPG disappointments are collaborating.

I really have no idea what to make of this at all.

Well maybe I do, that PC gaming is going to continue to decline for a few more years before it starts getting better again.

Still impressed Bethesda would attempt Fallout, given the unparalleled hostility in most Fallout fans.

Because let's face it... all the fans really want is Fallout 1 in a new box.

I don't think the fans are looking for Fallout 1 in a new box. They do want a sequel that will stay true to 1 & 2's style of play, humour, RPG system, and ability to really play through in a number of different ways.

The hostility is there because that doesn't appear to be happening.

I've played every Elder Scrolls game since Arena. While most are good (and some mediocre), they don't come close to the first 2 Fallout games (in my "unpaid" opinion of course ).

I hope they make FO3 an epic game, but I remain skeptical. Prove me wrong Bethesda!

I understood what you meant. I always find it funny though to hear people like Geoff Knightley and websites such as GS, IGN, etc. referred to as "professional", as if their opinions are in any way more valid than mine or anyone else's.

Not even that. There are a number of game-stopping bugs in Oblivion that Bethesda never fixed. Luckily, the community did.

you cant blame jerykk (or anyone else for that matter) for being incredibly sceptical of fallout3.

there is no possible way in this day and age they can make fallout3 an rpg. people develop for consoles, and console kiddies want shooters. the math has already been done for them.

my only problem with bethesda is their lack of support for their products in the way of actually fixing problems. they only seem interested in fixing the game-stopping bugs and no more.

and finally, im curious to see what this whole thing is about. i think splash damage did a good job with ET:QW, and that my only complaints with the game were based on limitations with the engine.

I'm not bashing FO3 as a whole, I'm bashing a specific design choice that the developers have already made. I actually liked Oblivion. Not as an RPG, mind you, but as an action/adventure game. However, Fallout is specifically supposed to be an RPG so I have concerns about Fallout 3.

what is funny about that? they did do those things. just because you dont like the game doesnt mean that lots of "critics"(the profesional kind, not the blues news kind ) realy liked the game and thought it was (one of) the best game of the year.

i happen to realy like the game, but havent played once since the new patch. AoC is why.

Christ man are you in dreamland or what? Oblivion is the best RPG ever conceived? Wow, I guess you have been playing games for maybe.... 3 years?

Skynet and all the bethesda Terminator games were really good, getting better as they went along (I guess we could forget about the very first game though). Still, what a cool franchise Terminator could have been. They could have made a great RTS game out of it where both sides played very differently.

Oh well, the Terminator movies going forward will be fucking stupid just like T3 and the games super gay as well. Everyone just wants a Terminator movie where its 2 hours of future combat all at night with explosions everywhere. That would be really cool and a subplot where a human team tries to infiltrate the core cpu.

Sounds like a plan. Both companies make outstanding games. The Oblivion series is probably the greatest rpg game ever conceived. How about a mmorpg where players can actually BUILD things. A persistent world where players can also visit other planets in real time. Not a point and click rpg/mmorpg like Warcraft and clones though. Something more in the spirit of Oblivion and LOTRO with a little Terminator thrown in. Since my Warcraft Universe idea hasn't been picked up yet by Blizzard, maybe this collaboration of Bethesda and Splash Damage will expand the genre. New ideas await us! It'll be interesting to see what they will create. Get posting on their forums!

Bethesda doesn't own the Terminator franchise rights anymore, last I read the new owners have set up their own internal studio to produce games for the upcoming Terminator movies.
