Graphics don't make the game for me and I prefer drawn art to photorealism in games, but the difference is definitely noticeable.

Yes, it's noticeable, but compare this shot of M+M II from 1988

That's a huge leap in graphics quality, and Might and Magic was never known for pushing the graphics barrier.

I'm not saying there haven't been improvements across the board, just that the decade before 1998 saw real changes in gaming. Not so much since then.
