Call of Duty 5 Revealed

MCV reports that Call of Duty 5 was unveiled in a conference call where Activision discussed its most recent round of financial reporting. The conference call is transcribed here (thanks Gamer's Hell), so here is exactly what was revealed about this project, which will be moving to another theatre of operations:
For Call of Duty, we’ll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to yet a new military theater, to engage our significantly larger user based, which nearly doubled last year as new users came into the franchise.

We’ll launch on all four platforms we participated on in fiscal 2008 plus we will launch on the PS2 and the Wii. We’ll drive category sales of downloadable maps and enhanced Call of Duty 4 retail SKUs.

I'm guessing this will be another COD3 game made by another company that is just exploiting the success of the previous COD game.

If it's done by Treyarch I'll give it a shot. I thought they did a good job on CoD3. Not as good as an IW release, but good enough to warrant a purchase.

Would like to see vehicles added again...choppers!

I still doubt it will be on PC just as CoD3 wasn't. I won't believe it until I see it. Rumors are it's going back to WWII in the Pacific, I think that would be a big mistake since the whole Modern Warfare thing was such a big hit. I'm sure we will see soon enough what the deal is.

Given what it is, I'd rather see it released as an expansion. I would be happy to buy more COD4 'episodes' and I suspect that's pretty much what it's going to be. $50 for more of the same wouldn't interest me a whole lot. Maybe if rather than the six or so hours of COD4 they gave you 20+ hours of the same quality it might be worth it.

It does seem like they're just breaking out the industrial milking rig.

Activision should stop bastardizing CoD's name with third parties.

Yeah, I know they have the rights and everything, but it's wrong, disrespectful to IW, and it dilutes the value of the brand.

I never realized you people could read so much from so little. They said virtually nothing except "oh, yeah, there will be a Call of Duty 5."

I hope it becomes a trend to target 6 platforms at once, including older platforms like the PS2. Building scalable game engines that can support a wide variety of hardware specs is good for everyone.

agreed, COD 3 was way earlier. I REALLY hope they do a PC version and that IW does it again. But when the hell are they going to make the new extra maps available for PC players? I'm more than happy to pay for them...

Games get designed for the lowest common denomenator. The lower you make that, the lower the standards for the game. This is definitely not "good for everyone".

I think it's somewhat natural to see so much marketing-speak in two sentences, and then just go ahead and assume the worst.

I liked COD 4s sp part of the game on PC. But the mp maps included lost me. All somewhat urban fodder. I was hoping for something more like Delta Force 2, wide open terrain maps etc. at any rate, I look forward to playing the next CODs single player game.

Agreed. One of the reasons why movie tie-ins suck 99% of the time is because they have to be made for practically every platform in existence. Developers spend more time just trying to get the game to work instead of making it good. Conversely, all the classic games are platform-exclusive.

Just because they implied it doesn't make it a certainty by any means ESPECIALLY when it comes to PC versions.

I don't think Wii gamers even know what "dumb down" means.

I heard a rumor that Call of Duty 5 might go back to World War II. Sigh, what are they going to name this one? Call of Duty 5 - World War 2.5 because the first 3 COD's weren't enough WWII...
