Which demonstrates my point that limiting the weapons carried by the player cripples gameplay diversity, and it renders all of that work put into creating those additional weapons pointless.
Yes. It was said to illustrate both of our points. Glad you caught that.
Just about all (if not all) of the old-school PC shooters made good use of their weapons, and the player got to carry them all at once. It's the more recent games made by design teams infatuated with Halo which have ruined PC shooters in that regard.
Yeah, but there are tons in which ammo was so plentiful for most weapons that I only used a handful. I think Half Life did a better job of forcing you to think about what to use when without truly limiting you.
Call of Duty 4 is exactly one of the recent FPS games I am complaining about. The game has loads of decent weapons, but you can't fucking use them at least not without constantly foraging around like a god damn squirrel. Sure it may not be very realistic to carry around a half-dozen guns or more, but only TWO?!
Then Call of Duty is not your game. It went for realism. Realistically, you're only going to have one weapon and a sidearm. Makes perfect sense to me. Call of Duty is just a type of game you do not enjoy.
Take, however, Turok, Far Cry, or one of a billion games that make next to no attempt at realism. That's when I have a problem. Far Cry sucked for this reason; I don't think I ever used its rocket launcher. Ever. Shotgun and machine gun. Exclusively. It's not like it was even strategic; you never had to pick one weapon over another based on strengths. Instead, the further you got into the game the better the machine gun you found. So the limitation served zero purpose. At least if they made you make a genuine choice, rather than an ammo-based and usefulness one. Again, Halo 2 at least gave you strategic reasons to take less powerful weapons with you, like the damn plasma pistol.
And sorry, Jerrykk. Futuristic soldiers have shields, shields go down and regenerate, game made sense and shields were a lot of fun as something unique. Then they started giving shields to idiot soldiers wearing wifebeaters and camo pants. Not buying it.
