More on PC Gaming

The Mark Rein Interview on Computer and Video Games asks a couple of console questions about the coming release of the PS3 edition of UT3, mod support on the 360, and a clarification that the Unreal Engine 4 will not be console-exclusive. The discussion also ends up on the now-inevitable topic of the state of PC gaming, and after reiterating issues with integrated accelerators and low-end PCs, he turns his attention on the PC business model:
That's something people should realise. When we talk about the PC gaming market, we're talking about our little narrow view of it. We're not talking about casual games, or World of Warcraft. We're just talking about the kind of experiences that we want to make - the really high-end, Hollywood-quality cinematic experiences. So whenever we have a complaint or a concern, it's really related to that.

We want to still be able to sell games like Unreal Tournament and Gears of War on the PC platform. That's important to us. We want to be able to package them up at retail and not make you pay a monthly subscription for them. But that may not be the way it goes in the future.

I hate when I hear people say "That's what's going to happen to market - you've got to change your business model". On the contrary, we don't. We have a perfectly good, working business model so we want to also have an economy where we can bring those games to PC and those gamers enjoy them as well.

Even if this very subjective comment is true, it still doesn't change the fact that Epic fucked all of its original fans right in the ass.

*sniff sniff* Mark, don't leave us!

Whatever. Your last two games have been utter crap, and instead of just admitting you made pisspoor games, you whine about piracy, about PC gaming dying and now you're jabbering about your "We want to make high end games!"

Reality check : There aren't that many people that have a PC capable of playing your high end games. Thus, you are limiting your market. Thus you won't sell many copies. A fucking four year old can understand this.

On the contrary, we don't. We have a perfectly good, working business model

Great! Stick with it! Go console only. Really. We won't miss you OR cliffyb.

want to also have an economy where we can bring those games to PC and those gamers enjoy them as well

Don't bother. Really. Nobody will miss you.

I think they're called movies. So why don't they just go and make movies?!

The UT3 flop on the PC was so much like an utterly predictable slow motion train wreck, it begs the question whether it was done on purpose to some extent. The "beta" demo caused an uproar about some basic issues of UI and networking on every site I've visited. Diligent fans compiled pages of well documented bugs in the game on the official beta feedback site. Epic goes completely silent and then the game suddenly goes gold, without a single change from the beta except a ping sorting bug.

Surprisingly to no one, the release falls flat on its face and now we get to hear the two blithering idiots Mark and Cliffy blame the downfall of PC market.

What sucks is that UT3 has such a small fanbase, we probably won't even see any decent mods or very many maps for it either. When you look at everything out there for UT and UT2K4, it's pretty depressing that things have gotten so bad...

Amen to #1

Epic and its presence in the PCGA (as that of Microsoft) is a joke.

Nowadays, all you get from Epic are stupid comments and constant whining. Mark, Cliffy, Tim, Mike, shut up and make a good game. And if you target PC, do it like you should, don't give us crap ports!

The original UT is still on a level that almost all FPS games cannot compete with, including it's own successors.

InBlack, if you think that UT3 is just UT with improved graphics, it's over your head and rather than put your ignorance on display for the world, should just keep quiet and accept that you dislike UT, don't know the first thing about it, and should move on to commenting on games more your style, like Serious Sam or Quake.

The original UT is still on a level that almost all FPS games cannot compete with, including it's own successors.

when I played the ut3 demo, distant textures were bland and blurry. close up textures were fine, but too much bloom like running around in a dreamscape. That's what lost me.

i reinstalled the original UT afterwards and had a blast the levels are fun, player taunts are fun, plays crisp and looks ok, even great with the textures on the 2nd cd.
also there were plenty of servers playing too!

UT3 is not like the original. I can't relate to the over-buff characters and armor. and goofball taunts.

LoL i remember the times when UT came out and most everyone here on Blues was lifting Epic up on high in the heavens right next to God and JesusH LOL!!!!! What a change of heart........

Serves you right Epic Fanboys! I really hated every single Epic game, from UT onwards. I hated its overblown weapons, its overdone gameplay, its MANGA style superhero characters and its totally shitty gameplay that in no way ever came close to any proper FPS standard...If you think about it for about 3 secs, UT3 is just UT with improved graphics. So what's wrong with it now that was never wrong before??

A *true* console port or PC port is a totally rewritten game, done by a specialist team who re-design and re-evaluate the game for the new platform.

It's not a port if it's totally rewritten. That would be a new game entirely.

Thats an excellent point, and I agree 100%. A *true* console port or PC port is a totally rewritten game, done by a specialist team who re-design and re-evaluate the game for the new platform. Sadly, nobody takes ports that seriously these days.

I just can't understand how cliffy and mark have done such a patheticly bad job and sunk epic so low from a classic game like Unreal, sad times.

I still say that they lost their way around the time they made the stockholder-appeasing move of dropping the "Mega" from their name.

Guess that after dropping the "Mega", they also decided to drop quality and originality to compensate for how less "Epic" they are.

At least those pricks are honest about something.

When I play Unreal Tournament 3 I get the feeling that the designers have grown up on nothing but Quake and pop culture movies. I just can't relate to their mindless fantasy tough-guy world.

I wouldn't even give them the credit of having played Quake; for its flaws, it at least had a compelling atmosphere, good music, and straightforward but entertaining gameplay - never mind that its engine really was trailblazing at the time of release. UT3's so played out that its ideas have become downright incestuous, and its high hardware requirements and production values took valuable time and money that should have been poured into gameplay and instead just let it tread water. Screw the lot of them for forgetting everything they should have learned and held onto as a respected independent game studio. I still say that they lost their way around the time they made the stockholder-appeasing move of dropping the "Mega" from their name.

..when you "bring those games to PC" they aren't really PC games, now are they. They are crappy ports from consoles, made from the bottom up for a different audience entirely.
