No Fallout 3 Demo

Eurogamer has word from Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks, who says a demo for Fallout 3 is not in the cards:
When you build it as one thing, there's no way to portion off a section and have it stand on its own without putting the whole game in the demo, which we're just not going to do. And it doesn't really capture the fun of a game like an Elder Scrolls or a Fallout, where you can go where you want and do what you want. So no demo, sorry.

Makes sense I guess. What the hell are you going to show for a game this size that would give a well rounded view of the gameplay?

The Fallout 1 demo was able to do it...

Attempt? I think Hines did a fine job doing it for us.

You can't really do a demo for a game like this of this scale no more than you could do a demo of Oblivion and do the game justice.

Apparently there won't be any reviews for Fallout 3 either. Reviewers don't need to play it to know it's a 10/10 game anyhow.

Yeah, right.

Fallout 1 demo was great, it was a little mini rpg in junktown, but it had a different name.
It was kind of like what valve did with HL-Uplink

I would expect that they could create something that would at least let users know that there wouldn't be any hardware conflicts and that their system could handle the game. It would set a lot of people's minds at ease when it came to deciding whether to buy it or not.

So the only way to find out if the game is good is to drop $50 and check it out? Sure as hell screenshots and videos of the game are going to do it less "justice" than any demo, no matter how crippled or limited.

Agreed. Not a very smart move on their part. Combine this with all of the negative blog-o-sphere sh*te rolling around about this game, and it looks downright stupid.

A smarter, a more "last-10-years-of-technology" move would be to have some (small) portion of the initial game in a free demo, and a "BUY NOW/DOWNLOAD NOW" link when they reach the end of the demo.

EDIT: Someday, I'm going to get the quote functionality right on the first try

I call b.s. The reality is that there have been so many open ended games that had demos. There is nothing special about fallout 3 compared to these games that would prevent a demo.

The game industry knows that when no demo is released it actually increases sales for widely hyped/advertised games. With no demo, the typical gamer will be influenced by the hype/advertisements and take the risk of buying the game without first seeing how it runs or if they will actually like it. That's reality.

I don't like games without demos but I can at least appreciate where they're coming from - in order to create a demo they would have to completely rework the game in order to create a demo that can't actually be reflective of the actual game, other than the engine itself. I guess I'll have to pay close attention to the reviews and avoid the shit sellout review sites (like Gamespot).

Eh, not necessarily. This is such a big game it could be difficult for them to put out a demo that would do the game justice.

dem or no demo it has no multiplayer... the game is asking for piracy.

valve, and blizzard (excluding mmos) are the most successful at fighting piracy in my opinion. obviously due to steam and battle net being such an integral part (more so for steam nowadays) of the gameplay experience.

...same old Bethesda bullshit. They could have easily made a demo for Oblivion by simply putting in the charactor generator dungeon. But then they didn't want people to see the reality as opposed to the hype until the product was on the shelves.

In many ways they are rather lazy developers. Each iteration of their games have less skills, powers, options, etc....as they focus more on graphics and dumbing things down for the console crowds.

TRANSLATION: We're too cheap to do anything more than absolutely necessary.

I think any gamer with two brain cells to rub together realizes a demo isn't going to show you the full scope of a game. You drop in a pre-made character, corner off a small section of the game, rewrite NPCs or whatever to give simple fun quests, and there you have it a demo that gives a taste of what the game is like. Unless the only facet of the game is 'GO WHERE YOU WANT, DO WHAT YOU WANT', with no questing/point, in which case, yeah I can see how a demo really wouldn't work, or the whole game for that matter.
