Age of Conan Beta Event

Funcom Announces plans to conduct a PvP Age of Conan beta event for 15,000 players from April 18-20. The event is being conducted in conjunction with GameSpot, so a free registration is required, as detailed on this sign-up page. Word is:
Durham, USA – April 9th, 2008 – Eidos and Funcom is proud to announce a unique Beta partnership with GameSpot.com, one of the world's biggest gaming websites. In a highly exclusive event, 15,000 gamers from across the world can log in and play Age of Conan, non-stop, from Friday April 18th to Sunday April 20th. The unique PvP weekend allows lucky gamers to test a limited part of the PvP functionality of Age of Conan, and the two different PvP mini-games Capture the Skull and Team Annihilation will be available.

To make the weekend even more interesting Eidos and Funcom also includes the engaging Age of Conan character creation system, allowing players to create avatars with strong personalities. All 12 classes in the game, including the barbarian, can be picked and tested, with Funcom transforming each character into a fully specced level 20 death machine. In PvP lobbies players can then chat and socialize, prior to entering PvP matches. Participants are urged to test different classes, and offer any feedback on the forums. There will also be forums on GameSpot.com where people can talk about the event, and Funcom staff will be present to gather feedback.

The signups are working now. Thank you!

I'm not holding my breath for this game. Funcom has had the worst launch in MMO history (AO). It was basically an unplayable beta for 6 months. I hope I get to try it out because you never know. It could be good.

The NDA will most likely drop 24 hours prior to the game going live.

Unlike the AO release theres alot more at stake this time for Funcom, like ruining a well known IP to most 20-30 somethings today.

Fion, is right the game is very fun but everyone's tastes are different so your mileage may vary. Since my Bro is building a new PC as I type this my guess is we'll be buying it. I know it will be fun for our small group, no doubts there.

One thing I can tell you without a doubt they are covering the solo player approach very well, better than any other MMO I've tested or purchased. So if you like MMOs but don't want to be forced into grouping get this game...

And if you're not sure wait for more feed back on open forums. Its not perfect but it is fun and not your run of the mill WoW clone.

I am suspicious of a MMORPG that does not have some kind of large open beta before launch.

smashinator: you dont know what you're talking about ..funcom secured 30 million in development funds for Age of Conan and Secret world months ago

and those beta testers dont have a freakin clue as well ..probably based on a old build of the beta

It says you can sign up on April 9th, but I'm not seeing a signup anywhere. Is this open to paid Gamespot members only? The information is vague at best.

Exactly. You cant just keep postponing and postponing until your game is 'perfect' and '100% balanced' and 'bug free' because it never will be.

You have to at some point you have to ship the game. It may not be at 100%, but if they can get all the big features in, and working, and fairly polished, they'll have a successful game.

It helps if the game is fun as well. Let me tell you, if not anything else, AoC is fun. And it will be ready by May 20th.

I'm not agreeing with the out of funds thing but I'm sure they still have budgets though.

They have to kick the kid out of home sometime.

The company is publicly traded, go read a quarterly report and see just how wrong you are.

The thickness of your ignorance, it's like a fucking shield that repulses insight.

Make no mistake AoC isn't remotely in the same state as AO was at this point.

And despite some technical problems and plenty of bugs remaining at this point, the game play is extremely fun and innovative and many folks from beta will tell you it's the funnest MMOG they've played in years.

Actually from what I read via your link sounds interesting (in a good way). Granted players will always have difference of opinion of how things should be, but so far I'm sorta impressed by 'the healing cone'.

If Funcom was out of money why would they spend the time/effort for Anarchy Online's graphics make-over?

And why would you register a Blues account just to post that AoC sucks?

You'll get to see all you need to of the beta in a weekend event. I haven't been playing much lately. I started tech beta last year and have been in the general beta long enough to grow my AoC folder >60GB. Yeah, I know I can erase old builds but it's on a drive by itself... there's no rush to clean it up just yet.

If you are on the fence then you'll most definitely want to beta or trail this before you jump on board. Though I may buy into it at reatil if my bros decides they want to team up.

Just don't expect miracles from FunCom, you have been warned.

eh, i dont really believe any of that 'the game sucks' rubbish unless i see some actual evidence. all i see on that forum are fanboys with e-peen wars.

and a weekend event is not enough for me to waste time downloading that much

Oh so what you're saying is that they are precisely in the same position they were in when they pushed Anarchy Online out the door.

Don't get too excited, based on beta impressions from testers on the fohboards it sounds like this game is not worth the time. The truth of the matter is that funcom is out of development funds and needs to release this game next month.

Its a pity, another big IP wasted.

Mind the beta is uncompressed. Some testers their beta folder is as high as 40g.

Because this is a beta event, it probably won't be compressed so expect a 5-6g download with a 16ish gig install.
