Violent Game "Journalism"

Newspaper offers cash for anti-games story on MCV reports a new high-water mark for British journalism, as StarNow.co.uk relates an offer from "a national newspaper" to pay someone who is willing to blame their crimes on video games, with the offer of money sure to make this quite the legit bit of journalism:
A national newspaper wants your story and will pay hundreds of pounds to the right person.

Write a few lines about how computer games turned you to crime and if it's something we like, we'll call you straight back.

Well, its the English implementation of a European convention. They have a way around it in the sense that Parliament can abolish it, but that is the same with every law.

ROFLMAO HRA yeah right - that is a European law which the government indisputably has a way around if they want to use it.

Actually, since the HRA 1998 execution has been completely abolished. Hanging for treason was technically still around until that date, but to all intents it had been ruled out since the 60s.

Also, we do have freedom of speech laws - ECHR Article 10? Campbell v MGN etc.

What are the main differences between our freedom of speech laws and theirs? Is it simply they have greater protection from libel suits or.....?

We don't have freedom of speech laws.

You could be charged with slander or liable in this country but it is still a hanging offense to commit treason. Please note when I say hanging I do mean it - you could rape and slaughter 500 children in this country and only get prison - but insult the queen and your dead.

Our law is in a mess. For instance it is actually LEGAL to urinate on the drivers side of any cab/taxi within london. Nobody is gonna try it because honestly if you piss on a cab drivers car he will kick your head in - but legally it's fine to do so.

The big problem is where as your laws are pretty new some of ours date back so far that some were carved into rock but a T-Rex.

Unfortunatly for us the government here in the uk never for one second thought it would be a good idea for people to be able to say what they thought. America likes to brainwash people into supporting their country with the pledge at school and the general "USA ALL THE WAY" attitude. GB on the other hand much prefer that we're shit scared of being executed if we say anything wrong.

But hey we haven't lost a war in very nearly 200 years so honestly who is right?

PS Fucking bollocks now I have a nice fat file with MI5 as well as the CIA. Shit.

Not that the American press is a shining example of professionalism but Brit journalists seem to absolutely love wallowing in the lowest form of garbage journalism they can get away with.

Man beats up journalist, blames it on video games and when he doesn't get paid, sues the newspaper and wins big!

Don't you just love a happy ending.

About the level of professionalism one can expect from "journalists" nowadays. Shameful.

Oh sweet - free moneyz. I'll go rob a few houses tonight to steal some more violent videa games which I can give to my children. That story should see nicely and be completely safe because amazingly our police are as professional as the media - they WILL NOT investigate a burglery unless you, the victim, know who did it.

Oh and I'm willing to bet this is the Daily Mail.

Here is what I want to do: write up an awesome fake story about how video games drove me to do x, y, and z. Take the money and use it to help fund my next game which I'll make as violent as possible. Then I'll make sure the fact that whatever newspaper is doing this is supporting the production of these "evil" games as a big part of my marketing campaign. Idiots.

Nothing surprising as various web sites and stations like Fox News have been ramping up this kind of shit ever since that chick stirred up controversy a few months ago.

Its time for the community to start chosing its fights carefully rather than froth over every single negative story that comes out.

This is indefensible. At the same time though, they know that a majority of their readers play video games, if not PC, certainly consoles. Not so much a scare piece, as it is riling their readership up.

Thank God there's un-opinionated journalism going on. What's funny is that usually the media will spin a story to coincide with their agenda; these guys have the spin already, they're just looking for the story.

Why do I think Jack Thompson is behind this ....

I didn't bother to check yet for sure as I just woke but what are the odds this is richard mellon scafe? Considering the gop in the US has been helping him takeover English language media worldwide, since at the very least 1980 and He is the largest single owner currently of English language TV, Newspaper and Mags worldwide. What do you think the odds are that the 24 hour fixit news channel and new york post is behind this? I am guessing this is a, no du'h moment.

Utter horror. Daily Mail or Daily Express you think? If you haven't yet, I recommend going and reading that Anne Diamond piece on the Daily Mail's website. Guaranteed to make you smash your face into your desk.
