On the Warhammer Online Delay

WarCry Network - Warhammer Online Delayed: Our Interview with Mark Jacobs chats with EA Mythic about the latest announced delay for Warhammer Online, looking for the reasons behind the setback:
The main area that requires further attention, according to Jacobs, is class balance. He explained how the classes of Warhammer Online do not necessarily fall into specific boxes as they do in many MMOs. Most classes are multi-faceted hybrids of several traditional RPG classes and this means they need to rethink some of the conventions of MMO balance. "If you don't release it right from the beginning with classes at least pretty much balanced, where they're all fun, you're not going to be in good shape in an [Realm vs. Realm] game."

Realm vs. Realm (RvR) is the other reason that this process is so vital. WAR is competitive and players won't have fun unless they're on a even playing field. With their experience in Dark Age of Camelot, the only other major RvR game - a term they have literally trademarked - they of all people should be aware of the precarious nature of competitive MMO balance.

The ultimate decision between Warhammer, World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, etc. is to realize that all of them are just pretty 3D slot machines that don't require any real skill or ability to play - only $15 a month and an ungodly amount of time. When this is realized, the choice of which to play is obvious : none of them. Play something else. Or do something else. There are tons of better things to do that will not only be more entertaining, but more fulfilling.

yeah Barnet's attitude on his video diaries was interesting to start with but we've generally found out in beta a lot of what he says is either heavily exaggerated or just plain bullshit.

Raising people's expectations and not delivering is worse than just making an average game.

I understand things change during beta and I hope the build they have, which is apparently 3 months ahead of the old one we have had in the last beta phase, is a serious improvement. People are getting bored.

I had really high hopes for this when i first started following the progress of this game, but more and more it seemed that the game was overhyped and not really that deep to begin with.
I mean wtf? They dropped the M. rating? In Warhammer???
And now this delay?
I think Age of Conan is going to really wipe the floor with this one.
I hope this doesnt affect the development of WH40k though....

I have a nifty blue line!

It'll apparently be a mix of PvP and PvE from what I understand. So if you're not up for PvP you can stay in the PvE areas. Of course supposedly you benefit the most from doing both.

The PvP system sounds pretty complicated, with the ability to raid towns and stuff like that, plus things the players do as a collective apparently can open up new areas/dungeons.

Sounds neat, but at the same time if its not implemented right it sounds like it could be a disaster. I'm hoping for an open beta/stress test this summer, but then I have high doubts about that.

I'm in the interested, but far from sold category.

So is this a PvP team, only or will there be PvE and some solo content?

I was never very interested in this.

I had more interest in the Warhammer 40k MMO from THQ that was speculated about a year ago.

Consider this is Mythic we are talking about here.

Yea.. I don't think they could balance classes given even 6 months to do it!

The more I see of WAR the more b-quality it looks.

Sounds like someone played a Thane in DAoC.

While I commend Mythic for attempting to balance classes, they don't have a good track record when it comes to "competitive MMO balance."

I don't get why they didn't just do DAOC 2. I would have gone fanboy apeshit over that, provided it was halfway decent.

well they purchased the warhammer license (and game, wasnt the warhammer mmo already under developement by someone else? i remember it had a more mature look.) most likely with the hopes of riding on the name and the history and fanbase. think lotr mmo. i never played DaoC so i cant agree or disagree, just offer my opnion on why they didnt do what you requested. one can argue, though, that DaoC already had a good following to warrant a comparable level of interest from previous fans of the game. ultimately, i think warhammer does have a broader following and a warhammer mmo had never been done. warhammer stuff on pc generally doesnt do well thouh, with the exception of Rituals creations. i think the dawn of war series has been the most succesful warhammer to pc adaptation, no? (my, that was a long paragraph)

Not a whole lot of positive buzz about this game. It looks kinda bad for Warhammer...

Class balance is one of the thing you're supposed to work on AFTER release. You then institute a nice, pretty little rotating cycle of overpowered and underpowered classes that keep people juuust happy enough by making sure their class is overpowered at least one month out of the year.

But seriously, you can never get it perfect since any system where every character is not equal will have inherent imbalances that are incorrectable without homogenizing the classes or relying on a Rock Paper Scissors concept. So why bother with that shit in beta when you should be adding and testing content and getting your game bugfree.

This delay has cost them dearly, if this doesn't come out before the WoW expansion, they better prepare themselves for the assfuck of the century because its going to lure back all the disenchanted WoW folks... if they haven't quit waiting for Warhammer and switched to Age of Conan or something else by then.

Yes, DAoC is proof that not only can Mythic not balance realms against other realms, they couldn't even balance the classes within each realm.
