I keep wondering, is it really that the PC market is shrinking or is it just that the console market is exploding?
Neither. This fairy tale that the console market is outperforming PCs by a factor of twenty times is bullshit.
To give you an example, go to Best Buy and ask to buy a machine that can play all the games in this mythical "console market."
You can't. So why is every single fucking console game thrown together and put up against the PC? What, Microsoft and Sony aren't fierce competitors or something?
Also, the console market includes every single fucking console ever made that still sells games. Even as little as a year ago, the Playstation 2 still outsold every other console (and presumably its games did as well.)
Console market.
PSP?
Console market.
DS?
Console market.
It's not just the PC vs the 360 and PS3 (and Wii if you're so inclined). It's PC vs every other single fucking gaming machine on the planet. It's amazing they haven't added the 7 games that get sold for a Mac every year to the "console market" yet.
If you compared PC sales (ALL PC sales, including all digital distribution) to a SINGLE console, I'd really like to know which console is outperforming the PC so badly. I'll hazard a guess and say it's probably fairly even. Some games sell a lot better on a console, and others sell a lot better on the PC.
I would have figured this truth to be self-evident, but apparently it's not so much.
But hey, a dev would be crazy not to go console. Look at the money you can make by shovelling shit out the door! Hello Halo 3! Hello pretty much every PS3 game released so far!
