This whole "casual" vs "hardcore" gamer thing is just dumb. I've been playing PC games and building my own machines since the original Wolfenstein. I've spent thousands of dollars in upgrades just to ensure I could play the latest, greatest techdemo game. The bottom line is, I like games of all types - from the simplest online Flash puzzlers to the melt-my-videocard-to-the-MB graphically extravagant FPS. So, I guess that makes me a "hardcore" gamer. That being said, there is nothing wrong with consoles. They are simply another variant in the world of video games. If you can't find fun in a console because of this idea that they are only for "casual" gamers, then you are seriously missing out.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
I did
miss out skip out on the last generation of consoles. a) CRT TV's vs PC monitor b) I don't like the dumbed down gameplay of many console games (button flashing on screen for non-interactive gameplay). c) FPS games generally suck on Consoles (Halo & GoW included).
For consoles I do like racing games, casual multi-player (Lego, Hot Shots, Super Stardust HD, etc.), and some RPG's.
Now I have an HDTV, so even PS2 (on PS3) games look pretty good. I just picked up Hot Shots Fore for PS2 for $20 rather than getting the same game with newer graphics for 3 times the price on PS3. Also came across a CE Final Fantasy XII for PS2 and picked that up. Likewise on PC I just picked up Bioshock (loving it) recently on Steam and will do the same with Audiosurf.
All platforms have their merit.
