Sins of a Solar Empire Patch & Expansion Plans

GWJ Conference Call Episode 76 on Gamers With Jobs promises hints about plans for a Sins of a Solar Empire expansion as part of their conversation with Ironclads' Blair Fraser about the PC RTS game. I can't access the podcast myself, but maybe you can, and if not, we can take comfort in knowing an expansion is in the works. On a semi-related note, the Sins of a Solar Empire Website has news on upcoming two patches, saying their current plan is for a version 1.04 patch, which "will contain some balancing updates based on player feedback, more computer AI updates, and other game play tweaking." This will be followed by a version 1.1 patch described like this:
This will be a more significant update providing a considerable overhaul of the multiplayer system with more features and updated networking code to make it more robust under a whole series of circumstances. I can't go into too much detail but it's pretty cool stuff. v1.1 will also include new graphical options including one with very high resolution textures.

I'm very much looking forward to the high resolution packs since, as of yesterday, I now have two 9600GTs in SLI mode in my freshly built box.

Seeing is how on my laptop I can play with everything set to high. And with my 8800GT desktop, everything set to extra high, and maxing out AA and AF with no problem at all. I doubt you will really need two 9600GT's for the higher resolution textures...

I'll wait for the demo. If it reminds me at all of MOO2, I'll think seriously about it.

The biggest difference between CoH and SoaSE is the speed. CoH is pretty frantic and it takes a lot to keep up with everything in that game. SoaSE, on the other hand... not so much. The empire tree is designed so well imo that it's really easy to manage everything going on despite the game being real-time.

I love CoH & CoH:OF would this game be even remotely like it?

I think so. CoH and OF are my only other PC games I play atm and I think SoaSE uses a lot of the same logic that CoH games do. You have to create a balanced set of forces slowly and caputer points carefully and tech up as you play to make sure you can counter your enemy as you go.

SoaSE is not as tactical as CoH, less emphasis on where you units fight (in cover, in buildings, etc) and more emphasis on empire planning so researching techs that have your factories crank out more materials, researching tech that makes your ships more powerful etc.

I like both games if that means anything. I prefer SoaSE atm because there appears to be more ways to fight against your enemy. It's a larger battlefield but uses a lot of the same strategies. You take planets so you can earn more resources, you eventually run into your enemy and start fighting for control of forward points (planets). CoH has shorter games though, the points system in CoH makes sure games do not drag on forever but SoaSE games can go on a long time. But it never gets boring.

It's a thrill trying to predict where your enemy will attack and being ready for it at all times.

edit: Looks like it's all space combat like Homeworld. I've never tried one of these. Not sure I'll like it. Guess I could try it out...

Honestly, it's a lot more simple than Homeworld. The 3rd dimension is mostly for look and feel and has only a small bearing on gameplay. Generally you don't spend much time worrying about it. The only times I really notice it is when my ships path over/under a star or when two planet nodes are very close to each other.

Overall it's pretty fun. It's a fair bit different from CoH in that you'll probably focus mostly on your capital ships and lesser units are generally expendable (though you should still try to not lose them...). The scale is quite a bit larger with some maps spanning up to 5 star systems.

Homeworld was a bit more hardcore sci-fi in its implementation. SoaSE is more relaxed.

+1 Post of Loving (again)

For anyone still on the fence about this, there should be a demo out soon as the plans were to put out the 1.03 patch, demo, then 1.04. Though seriously, you should just buy it.

Not as of yet.

Stardock and Iron Clad were told by European publishers/retailers that "space games don't sell well in Europe" with the result that there is no retail release in Europe.

Last I heard, they were on their way back across the Atlantic with the North American sales figures to try and convince them to change their minds.

Is there ground combat like other RTS games or is all combat in space?

I've never played any of the big Space games with RTS in space. I love CoH & CoH:OF would this game be even remotely like it?

I love IronClad. I love Sins of a Solar Empire.

I want to give them more money. In fact I can't wait to give them more money because I know what they are going to be selling will be worth every penny.

The game is a gem, somehow it really makes you feel like you ar e at the wheel of a huge war machine and the choices you make on how to defend your empire are unforgiving. If you move your forces out of position or don't set them in the most ideal location for an attack it has serious concequences. There is work to be done on the game for sure, lots of units are unbalanced but as is the game is still crazy fun.

I love how you can bribe pirates to attack your enemies! Or you can sell metal/crystal on the market to other players secretly! (Ie when a player buys metal/crystal on the market he might be paying that 300 credits to the enemy!)

I cannot remember the last time a game made me crack the book after playing a few games but this game actually had me reading through the manual to find some advantage I could use against the other sides.

And I've only tried playing the Advent! Haven't even touched the other 2 armies yet! Happy times are here again!

I just found out they have a Collector's Edition too!

Dude, I've been crowing about that for awile now. You can get it by ordering directly from them, and while you wait for your boxed copy to show up, they'll send you a working serial so you can go ahead and download/play the game in the meantime...

It's a win/win all around...
